IV. Generalization
What are the vocal characteristics of African music?
How will you describe the music of Africa?
Drums in Africa are not only for entertainment. They are so embedded in African culture that
they are part of the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the African people.
The African music has spread and flourished to every corner of the world because they were
allowed to keep their own social identities and culture. African slaves used music in their
everyday lives which gave way to the development of style; sing their prayers, praises and
worship which later became spiritual music, for emotional expression of sadness, loss, grief,
and injustices that developed.
