Good morning class!

Group Leaders, who are absent in your group?

B. Review
Before we proceed to our next discussion, let’s have a review.
What have we discussed last meeting? We have discussed the characteristics of African
music
Will you tell me something about the characteristics of
African music? The music of Africa is interesting, unique and
diverse.
What else? African music is closely associated with dancing.
Very good! What else? Their music emphasis is placed more strongly on
rhythms than melody or harmony.
They also use repetition as an organizing principle
on top of which an improvisation is built.
Very well said! In general, we have discussed the five
characteristics of African music and what are these? Conversation (Call and Response)
Improvisations (Non-scripted ways of singing that
allow for sincere conversations)
Repetition
Voice as an instrument (The voice can change its
tone, tempo and create mood)
Instrument as a voice (Instrument serves as a
singer along with the performer)

Great!
You really have learned a lot from our discussion last
meeting. I guess this time you are all ready to proceed to our
next topic. But first, we will play a game called the Rhythm
Game. I would like to ask everyone to please stand up and
form a circle.
(Then the teacher will proceed to the game)

C. Motivation

The rhythm game will be a composition of repetition and call

and response. I will do the call and you will respond. You will
repeat what I do. When I say “Here’s my rhythm now check
my beat” *do some rhythmic gestures in 4 bars*
After I do a 4 bars rhythmic gestures, you will answer saying We got your rhythm now here’s your beat.
“We got your rhythm now here’s your beat” *do as the
teacher does in 4 bars*
Now clap and do the rhythmic gestures I made.
(The teacher will play the music to start the game)
(The game continues in repetition)

Here’s my rhythm now check my beat.

Good job everyone!

What have you observed with our game Ma’am!

Yes? It’s repeating action
In line with the characteristics of African music, this is what
we called? Repetition!

What else? Call and Response!

You got it!
Those characteristics were also included in our next topic of

What are the vocal characteristics of African music?
How will you describe the music of Africa?
Drums in Africa are not only for entertainment. They are so embedded in African culture that
they are part of the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the African people.

The African music has spread and flourished to every corner of the world because they were
allowed to keep their own social identities and culture. African slaves used music in their
everyday lives which gave way to the development of style; sing their prayers, praises and
worship which later became spiritual music, for emotional expression of sadness, loss, grief,
and injustices that developed.
