MIDTERM EXAMINATION IN TECHNICAL ELECTIVE 4

2ND SEMESTER 2019-2020

Name: ________________________________Yr. &Sec. _______Date: ______Student No. ___________Rating:_______

General Direction: This is a 50-item test, read each direction written in every type of test.
PROBLEM SOLVING. Solve the following problems. Complete solution is required. Strictly no erasures.
Situation 1 – Write shear and moment equation for the beam shown. Let x be the distance measured from left end of
the beam. Also, draw shear and moment diagrams, specifying values at all change of loading positions and at points of
zero shear. Neglect the mass of the beam.

Situation 2 – A truck with axle loads of 40 kN and 60 kN on a wheel base of 5m rolls across a 10-m span. Compute the
maximum bending moment and the maximum shearing force.

Situation 3 – Three wheel loads roll as a unit across a 44 ft span. The Loads are P1 = 4000 lb and P2 = 8000 lb separated
by 9 ft, and P3 = 6000 lb at 18 ft from P2. Determine the maximum moment and maximum shear in the simply
supported span.

Situation 4 – A simply supported beam, 2 in wide by 4 in high and 12 ft long is subjected to a concentrated load of 2000
lb at a point 3 ft from one of the supports. Determine the maximum fiber stress and the stress in a fiber located 0.5 in
from the top of the beam at midspan.

Situation 5 – A 50 mm diameter bar is used as a simply supported beam 3 m long. Determine the largest uniformly
distributed load that can be applied over the right two-thirds of the beam if the flexural stress is limited to 50 MPa.
Situation 6 - The circular bar 1 inch in diameter shown in Figure is bent into a semicircle with a mean radius of 2 ft. If P =
400 lb and F = 200lb, compute the maximum flexural stress developed in section a-a. Neglect the deformation of the
bar.

Situation 7 – An 8 m beam simply supported at the ends carries a uniformly distributed load of 12 kN/m over its entire
length. What is the lightest W shape beam that will not exceed a flexural stress of 120 MPa? What is the actual
maximum stress in the beam selected?

Situation 8 – A simply supported beam 10 m long carries a uniformly distributed load of 20 kN/m over its entire length
and a concentrated load of 40 kN at midspan. If the allowable stress is 120 MPa, determine the lightest W shape beam
that can be used.

Situation 9 – Select the lightest W shape sections that can be used for the beams and girders in the figure if the
allowable flexural stress is 120 MPa. Neglect the weights of the members.
Situation 10 – A portion of the floor plan of a building is shown. The total loading (including live and dead loads) in each
bay is as shown. Select the lightest suitable W if the allowable flexural stress is 120 MPa.
