sequence

Like a normal session, online classes can have sequences. The

following one is the online the equivalent of a PPP sequence for 1 hr.

(Christina Cavage, 2020)

Lead-in Chew Close

Lead-in
• Welcome students.
• Call roll.
• Remind your students rules of interaction (no
background noise, nomination to speak, etc.).
5 min • Warm-up questions, e.g.: How was your week?
• The purpose is to herd in students to make them
switch to studying mode.
Chunk
• Just as in Presentation, in this stage of the
sequence, the teacher gives input to the session.
• We can have grammar, vocabulary, phonology or
discourse input.
15 min • We can explain info with power points, videos,
images.
• Try to include students in the input, e.g.: Sandy,
What do you think about this picture?
Chew
• This would be the equivalent of Practice, so it is the
best place to make them do controlled practice,
e.g.: Tell two sentences with target structure /
vocabulary / function.
15 min • Besides telling them instructions, you can write
them on the chat (equivalent to ICQs).
• Try to include all students in this stage by direct
nomination.
Check
• Students check what they produced.
• Assign different forms of checking set tasks. For
example write a paragraph, or write 5 sentences
on the chat, etc.
15 min • Try to personalize knowledge by using target
language or vocab with student’s experience, e.g.:
Write 5 sentences with reported speech to describe
what your colleagues or classmates told you during
the week on the chat. You have 7 mins.
Close
• Reflection or Take-away of the session (Think –
Pair – Share)
• Assign flipped tasks.
• Q&A.
5 min • Show them what they have achieved.
• Set homework that can be sent by mail.
• Do a game.
• Thank students.
