External Pumping Station

This document summarizes design calculations for a pump station project. It includes calculations to determine pipe sizing, pump head, wet well sizing, and a preliminary surge pressure estimate. The key points are: - Pipe sizing is determined to be 4 inches to maintain velocities between 0.6-1.5 m/s with 3 operating pumps. - Total pump head is calculated as 90.03 feet based on friction loss, static head, and a 5% safety factor. - A system head curve is generated and compared to pump curves to select a pump with 18 kW power at the design flow rate. - The wet well is sized at 4.318 meters total height to accommodate the

1- Flow Determination

daily average flow (present) = 5 l/s = 79.26 gpm

peak flow (present)= 15 l/s = 238 gpm
daily average flow(future) = 5 l/s = 79.26 gpm
peak flow(future) = 15 l/s = 238 gpm
number of acting pumps = 3
number of stand-by pumps = 1
consider the total pump capacity is slightly higher than the peak flow
in this case:
flow per pump = 5 l/s = 79.26 gpm
total flow from p.s 15 l/s = 238 gpm
total flow per pump is higher than the peak flow by : 0 %

2- Force Main Sizing

The velocity in the force main should be:

maximum of 1.5 m/s (5 fps)
minimum of 0.6 m/s (2 fps)
As such for the flow indicated above the pipe size will be determined as follows:
1-when one pump is acting the velocity should not be less than 2 fps
2- when all pumps are acting the velocity should not be higher than 5 fps

pipe diameter (in) 3 4 5 6 8 10 12 14

1 pump acting (fps) 3.593 2.021 1.294 0.898 0.505 0.323 0.225 0.165
2 pumps acting (fps) 7.186 4.042 2.587 1.797 1.011 0.647 0.449 0.33
3 pumps acting (fps) 10.78 6.063 3.881 2.695 1.516 0.97 0.674 0.495

As such pipe size shall be = 4 in = 100 mm

the system curve will be generated with 10 points from 50% to 150% of the design flow.
also the pump curve will be extracted from the manufacturer catalogue for the same flows.
then the curve for multiple pump operation will be generated.
