WHAT IS IT?

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that uses


BEHAVIORAL techniques like:

ITCH [ID the problem, Think about possible solutions, Choosing a


solution to try
Filling out the Cognitive Triangle with a student
Thought Record
Three Cs [Catch, Check, Change]
Coping Cards
Reverse Role Play
Roadmap to Success

and COGNITIVE techniques like:

Enactment [role play]


Testing it Out: Assigning an action task
Behavior Activation: Scheduling a
pleasant event
Systematic Desensitization [increasing
exposure to a stimulus step by step]

WHAT DOES A SESSION LOOK LIKE?

General Outline
Students complete a Pre-session Quick Sheet
The counselor checks in with the student (how are you? tell me how
things are going?)
The counselor and student make an agenda of items to discuss during
the session
The counselor and student discuss the items on the agenda (gathering
a problem description and thinking about exceptions)
The counselor may give the student a homework assignment (use of
coping cards, using a thought record, an action task etc.)
The counselor summarizes the session and provides feedback for the
student

WHO RECEIVES CBT?

Any and all students can see their school counselor for their social-
emotional well-being!
