TAPING

I. Introduction:

Measuring distances is a key concept in the field of surveying and civil engineering.
These entire career fields would not be effective if the measurement and surveying of the area is
not done properly. There are multiple ways to measure distances. These are less accurate than
other means, but still effective. Taping is the linear measurement of the horizontal distance
between two points using a surveyor’s tape. Observation of horizontal distances by taping
consists of applying the known length of a graduated tape directly to line a number of times.
Tape survey is the simplest method of surveying. In this survey only measurements are
taken in the field, and the rest work, such as plotting calculation etc. are done in the office. This
is most suitable adapted to small plane areas with very few details. If carefully done, it gives
quite accurate results. The necessary requirements for field work are chain, tape, ranging rod,
arrows and sometime cross staff.
