I find myself designing, redesigning, re-redesigning my info spot project after looking at other designers'

work. Eventually I get to a place where I feel it is acceptable enough to release to the public, but I am
never fully satisfied with 98% of my work...and if I am satisfied, it is typically temporary and after a
couple weeks I start to reconsider my design in a different, usually more negative light.

Personally, It's a problem I struggle with internally but what I've come to realize is that the design isn't
all about me. I'm just the one piecing things together to solve a problem for someone else. In my
opinion, the more you can detach your self worth from the design and still remain mindful of standards
and goals the better. I feel like design and personal tastes are constantly evolving, which makes me
question previous choices. The important is progress and personal accomplishment. When I look back, I
must feel like I’ve moved forward, and that I am getting better.

From what I learned in class, government type structures usually has a characteristic of longitudinal in
plan, direct, and more on the functionality. And so I incorporate the characteristic into my design. The
spot is design purely to inform or simply gives information to the tourist. In addition, the morphology of
my structure was inspired by the movement of the leaves when weaving a ‘pusu’. A hanging rice that
can be found in Cebu. The weaving of pusu started in Cebu and has always been part of Cebuano
identity which means the structure also features Cebuano characteristic.

In my zoning, I both apply the front and back of the house. The front of the house is all the places the
tourists see, visit, and interact with during their time at the spot. The front of the house on my spot
encompasses the printed materials area, communication service area, computer service area, the laptop
area, the outer portion of the tourist assistant booth together with the shelf, and of course the entry. In
the back of the house on the other hand encompass only with the inner portion of the tourism booth
where the behind the scene area that the customer will not see. The inner portion act as the central
command center in the spot because it is where the tourist assistant place his/ her belongings,
important documents and store its products before/while welcoming the visitors.

The entry of course will be the will be the first impression so it should capture the theme of the spot.
The booth should be visible as soon as the visitor enter. It is important to greet the visitors as soon as
possible. The laptop area should be comfortable and welcoming. Lastly the services such as the
computer services, communication services and the printed materials should also have a comfortable
and clean place since it’s the place where the visitors spend most of their time in the spot.
I combine both back of the house and front of the house in such a way that the entire house receives
the same communication. By the tourist assistant there will be an interaction between BOH and FOH.
Also I combined them by placing the back of the house on the side where it cannot hinder the view
outside and cannot be notice easily. By doing so front of the house can let the spot’s personality shine
and gives more experience to the visitors.

From our previous discussions i learned lot of things such as circulation system. Circulation patterns are
primary ways of organizing spaces, buildings and groups of buildings. I also learned that tere were 5
different circulation system. First was the simplest and one of the most flexible which the spaces are laid
out along a straight path that connects two major elements at the end. It was called the linear or
dumbbell layout. Then, making a complete loop results in a doughnut configuration which makes a
continues exit way. Third is the grid system, is often used for very large buildings where access must be
provided to many internal spaces. One major space with paths extending from his central area is
another type of circulation system that is called radial layout. Lastly, field pattern, which consists of a
network of paths with no strong direction.

The circulation system that I applied is somewhat like a radial system but the path that are extending
are shorter but shows different spaces and purpose at the end. The reason I apply it because I want to
experiment things since I learn that using radial configuration generally requires large site and is more
appropriate for large buildings or building complexes. In order to have a suitable circulation applying it
will incorporate and complement with my organizational system. Also, I am confident that using this will
not just complement with my organization system but it also gives quick service and visual cleanliness to
the tourist.

During our discussion in classs we learcned that the functional needs of a particular type of building
most often influence how the physical environment is organized. And, there are six fundamental
organization concepts: namely the linear, axial, grid, radial, and clustered.
Linear organizations are linear sequence of repetitive spaces

Axial are variations of the linear system with two or more major linear segments about which spaces or
building are placed.

Grid systems consist of two sets of regularly spaced parallel lines

Central organizations are based on one space or point about which secondary elements are placed

Radial plans have a central focus but also have the ability to extend outward to connect with other
spaces, or for expansion.

Clustered organizations are loose compositions of spaces or building related around a path, axis, or
central space, or simply grouped together.

Out of the 6 Organizational system I used the clustered organization since most of my spaces and design
elements should be in close proximity beside of a rectangular footprint. I believe that each
organizational system has their own advantage and disadvantages. Applying cluster organization that is
very suitable to use for the small 15 sq.m footprint area as design of my plan is very adaptable to the
requirements of different sizes of spaces and they are easy to add onto without disrupting the overall
composition of my structure plus I was able to create a central space to breathe.

Quantitatively, our client needs initial concepts of tourist informations spots that would cater tourism
information services. It was advisable that one side can be open during its use. Also, the tourism
information spot shall hold at least 3 computers with 1 space for a laptop use with comfortable seating,
telephones, 1 small booth for tourism assistant and shelves for local maps and tourism information
printed materials. The client eyes on just using 15 small structure.

The tourism booth is a small structure which means the design elements are closely related to each
other that is because they have one main function which is to give information to the tourist. By
analyzing carefully, the adjacency of the design elements/ spaces was determined based on their
functionality. Starting with the main entrance. It is important that the main entrance is adjacent to
tourist assistant booth and tourist information printed materials since these two elements will be the
one two assist and greet the travelers to get information. It is also important that the entrance is in close
proximity to telephone and computers because these two will be the second medium/ option on getting
information. Second, the tourism booth is close to all the design elements/ spaces inside the structure
so that the assistant can see the visitors and guide them to different spaces. Lastly the telephone and
computers should be adjacent and near to all the spaces since it is capable of making the information
clear and can provide opportunities for feedback.
First of all the absolute positioning challenged me to think critically and analytically about why spaces
will be located next to one another. The main design element that is based on absolute positioning is the
tourist assistant booth which is position directly front of the entrance for assistance purposes. The
telephones and computers on the other hand must be position at the back since it occupies most of the
spaces and doesn’t have to be exposed to open area because it might damage the equipment.

The main key use of the structure is to serve both tourist and locals providing location and information
services which includes assistance of tourist. The structure offers 4 different mediums of information
services, one is through the printed materials, one other thing is through computer services which is
adjacent to the telephone area that is also another medium of getting information. Lastly , through
tourism services in the booth. These four services serves as the key uses and service uses.
