WATER LILY CONCEPT
USC SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

THE RECENT IMPLEMENTATION OF THE K-12 PROGRAM IN PHILIPPINE EDUCATIONAL

SYSTEM ENTAILED A DEMAND FOR ADDITIONAL LEARNING FACILITIES IN MANY

SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. IN ANSWER TO A POSSIBLE SURGE IN THE

NUMBER OF ENROLLEES BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE NEW CURRICULUM, THE

UNIVERSITY OF SAN CARLOS CALLED FOR A COMPETITION TO DESIGN A MUCH

NEEDED SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING. THE USC WATER LILY SENIOR HIGH

SCHOOL IS A STRUCTURE THAT ACCOMODATE AT LEAST 55 CLASSROOMS,

SERVICE ROOMS, LABORATORIES AND CIRCULATION OF SPACES STITUATED

WITHING THE CAMPUS, THE SITE DEEMED FEASIBLE FOR THE PROJECT IS A VALLEY

IN A FORESTED AREA THAT USED TO BE A WATERWAY AND IS STUDDED WITH

DETENTION PONDS.

BECAUSE OF THE UNIQUE SITE, THE FORM OF THE BUILDING IS INSPIRED BY THE

CONCEPT OF A WATER LILY. A BUILDING THAT FLOAT IN PONDS LIKE A WATER

LILY.THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED TO BE SIMPLE AND SAFE SOLUTION TO THE

BASIC ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM OF INTEGRATING THE DETENTION PONDS FOR

SUSTAINABILITY. LIKE WATER LILIES, THE BUILDING IS ALSO DESIGNED TO BE

ADAPTIVE TO TEMPERATURE AND CLIMATE OF THE ENVIRONMENT. LASTLY, THE

PROPOSED STRUCTURE IS TO BE RAISED UP ON STILTS AROUND THE PONDS,

PROVIDING AN OBSTRUCTED SPACE BENEATH FOR THE WATERWAYS THAT

CHANEL STORMWATER DOWN FROM THE NEIGHBORING MOUNTAIN AREAS. THE

FORM IS COMPOSED OF TWO WINGS THAT WRAP AROUND IT, CASCADING TO

FOLLOW THE EXISTING TERRAIN.

POSSIBLESUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Vertical Gardening

Vertical gardens help to reduce the carbon footprint of the

senior high school building by filtering pollutants and
carbon dioxide out of the air, which also benefits those
living nearby as the quality of the air is improved. Exterior
wall vertical gardens also help to The reduce heat
absorption, which can result in significant energy savings in
areas where students rely on air-conditioning during the
warmer parts of the year.I believe It's vertical because you
are trying to grow more crops on a smaller land area and this
usually means going upwards into buildings. It normally
means that, instead of having a single layer of crops over a
large land area, you have stacks of crops going upwards. It's
also associated with city farming and urban farming. The
beauty of vertical farming is that we can go as high as you
want without taking up so much land area.
POSSIBLE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Greywater Plumbing Systems

A greywater system is used to take water that has already been used
from places like your laundry, shower and sink and divert it to use in
another purpose like watering gardens or landscaping instead of
flushing it down into the sewer. A greywater system diverts waste water
either to an irrigation or a treatment and recycling system. The impact
of Greywater systems to the senior high school building is that it may
reduce the facility's need for fresh water, as everything except for toilet
streams can be processed for reuse. It also help in providing water to
the sorrounding plants and landscapin.
POSSIBE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Rainwater Harvesting System

Rainwater harvesting system, also called rainwater

collection system or rainwater catchment system,
technology that collects and stores rainwater for human
use. Rainwater harvesting systems range from simple
rain barrels to more elaborate structures with pumps,
tanks, and purification systems. The impact of these
sustanable approache to the senior high school building
is that it can reduce stormwater runoff from the sloping
site of USC. The elimination of runoff can reduce
contamination of surface water with pesticides,
sediment, metals, and fertilizers.Rainwater harvesting
can provide an independent water source in areas where
other water sources are unavailable, or the water quality
is unacceptable, or they are too expensive to develop, or
they are too difficult to obtain.
POSSIBLE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Louvers + Sun Shading Devices

I think one of the most expensive building costs is the

mechanical system used for cooling the USC building.
This applies to the cost of the system itself along with
the cost of running and maintaining it. One way to lessen
these costs is by using smart design and incorporating
low tech louver systems to help regulate the amount of
heat gain in the summer and take advantage of the sun
especially to the south portion of the building. External
window shading is an excellent way to prevent unwanted
solar heat gain from entering a conditioned classroom.
POSSIBLE SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

Solar Panels

Solar panels also extend the life of senior high roof, because they protect
from the elements, such as rain, snow and debris. They make the house more
energy-efficient in the summer because the hot sun is not beating down on
the roof directly—it is instead being absorbed by the panels, keeping the
house temperature lower.
