Motion Graphs

Quantitative interpretations we can get

 a. The distance at any given time

b. The average velocity from the slope of the line.
1. Position  vs. Time Graph
c. The instantaneous velocity from the slope of a
tangent line to the curve at a point.

2. Velocity v.s Time Graph

a. the velocity at any given time
b. the average acceleration from the slope of the
line.
c. The displacement of the object by finding the
area between the line and the time .

3. Acceleration vs. Time Graph a. the acceleration at any given time.

 x-direction
o Δx (displacement in the x-direction only)
o v (x-component only)
o t
 In the x-direction, the distance between every frame (unit of time) is constant. This means
the velocity is constant so there is no acceleration in the x-direction.
 y-direction
o Δy (displacement in the y-direction only)
o a (due to gravity)
o vi (y-component only)
o vf (y-component only)
o t
 In the y-direction, the distance between every frame (unit of time) is changing. This
means there is acceleration in the y-direction.

EFFECT OF AIR RESISTANCE

 Calculations become more complicated.

 Acceleration is not constant.
 Effects can be very large.
 Maximum height and range decrease.
 Trajectory is no longer a parabola.
