Student Name:………………………………...

Exercise1: (10.5points)
20/
The table below represents the variation of the atmospheric pressure P expressed in kPa for
different altitudes (h) expressed in km.

20 15 10 5 0 Altitude (km)
10 15 30 60 100 Atmospheric
pressure(kPa)
a) Draw the curve that gives the variation of
the atmospheric pressure as function of the altitude. (3pts) Scale : 1cm : 2km
1cm : 10 kpa
Graph.

b) How does the atmospheric pressure vary with the altitude? (1.5pts)
The atmospheric pressure decreases from 100 Kpa to 10 Kpa when the altitude increases from 0 to 20 km.

c) What is the value of the atmospheric pressure at sea level (zero km)? (1.5pts)
At sea level, the atmospheric pressure is 100 Kpa.

d) At what altitude is the pressure 40 kPa? (1.5pts)

At 40 Kpa, the altitude is 8 km.

e)What is the value of the atmospheric pressure at the altitude h= 12.5 km? (1.5pts)
At h=12.5km, the atmospheric pressure is 22.5 Kpa.

f) What will be the value of the pressure of 30 kpa in Bar, atm and cm Hg? (1.5pts)

30 Kpa = 30/100 Bar = 0.3 Bar

30 Kpa = 0.3 atm

30 Kpa = 30/1.36 cm Hg = 22.05 cm Hg

Exercise2: (2.5points)
Answer by T(true) or F(false) and correct the false ones.

1.In fluids, heat is transmitted by convection.

True.

2.The distances between the particles of a solid are relatively large.

False, small

3. The matter combines to form atoms.

False, the atoms combine to form matter.

4. Particles of a gas are in continuous motion because they are very close to each other.
False, very far...

5. Heat is a certain form of energy which transfers a cold body to a hot one.
True.

Exercise3: (4points)
Observe the figure below which represents four test-tubes A, B, C and D that are partially dipped

in a container containing water.

In which tube(s) : justify your answer in each case.

a.) the pressure of the confined gas equal to the atmospheric pressure?

In B, since the levels of water in the tube and in the bath are the same.

b.) the pressure of the gas greater than the atmospheric pressure?

In A, since the level of water in the tube is lower than that of the bath.
c.) the pressure of the gas less than the atmospheric pressure?

In C, because the level of water in the tube is higher than that in the bath.

d.) the pressure of the gas the greatest?

In D, since the level of the water in the tube is the lowest.

Exercise 4: (3points)

Give for each arrow (letter) the name of the corresponding change of state.

Ice a Water c Vapor

b d
a: Fusion

b: Solidification

c: evaporation

d: condensation

GOOD LUCK :)
