Reflection 1

The first piece of data was a newspaper article which improved my knowledge on how

current affairs impact the lyrics of dancehall music. This article proves that the state of the

country affect how dancehall artists think. It also indicates to me how dancehall music has

fallen over the years.

The second source of information was a comic strip depicting the lewd lyrics of dancehall. In

saying it has changed my whole perspective of dancehall music. This helped me to

understand that current affairs can have a negative impact on these lyrics.

The final piece of data was a song indicating the impact of current affairs in the country and

how it’s changed dancehall music over the years. This song helped me to understand that

many dancehall artists just sing or write lyrics about what is depicted throughout the country

and what’s happening to the economy.

Reflection2

The tone portrayed in the newspaper article was one of concern as seen in lines such as “haul

and pull up kulcha”, “cock mouth kill cock” and the use of words such as raucous, academia

and indiscipline. In the comic strip, the tone can also be described as one of concern based on

the only words contained in the picture “these negative dancehall lyrics are a cause for

concern”. The writer or artist also creates a philanthropic tone in the picture. The writer of the

song creates a sarcastic tone and also creates a tone of importance as heard in lines such as

“Well done, Well done, Mr. politician man you've done a wonderful job a tear down we

country demolition man” and “A wah kind a plan which is to keep poverty and unemployment

on the rise corruption and not to mention the lies”. The title of the song is also an indication

of its sarcastic tone.

The use of language is also another significant part in all three sources as the writer’s

objective is to inform the readers what is happening to the society. In the article words such

as violence, gangsterism and moral decay are a clear indication of this. The artist uses

political diction through the use of the word economy in the comic strip. In the song the

words demolition man, politician man and inflation declare a patriotic diction.
