Ever since I was a little girl I wanted to be in the medical field. After high school, I

obtained a Medical Assistant Certification. I began working at an office and I was always the

one being called to translate medical terminology to Spanish. I fell in love with the field and

knew I wanted to pursue nursing. I enrolled in my local community college and later was

accepted into the nursing program. Little did I know that my life would take a different path. In

2013, I began a health battle. “I had been diagnosed with a malignant intestinal tumor”. After

many therapies, my health was not progressing. In 2014, “ I was fighting a battle between life

and death”. As a patient, I saw the medical field and convinced myself that it wasn't for me.

While at the hospital, two women that impacted my life were my professors from Hartnell

College that was unconditional support for me, motivated me not to give up, and persuaded me

to stay in school. I declined the nursing program and decided to pursue Spanish because I fell in

love with the language. My Spanish teachers enthralled my heart with their passion for

education and support for students.

I obtained two associate degrees: Spanish and Sociology from Hartnell College. I enrolled

at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) to obtain a Bachelors’s in Spanish. My

interest is also in Sociology. I have noticed there is a high demand for Spanish speaking

professionals in the mental health and social behavior sector. Therefore, my hope during CSUMB

is to learn advanced Spanish to become a Spanish professor and then apply to a Speech

Pathologist Program to help people in the community with their speech.

While at CSUMB, I have learned about the many obstacles that the Latinx community

faces by participating at my assigned service-learning site. I saw families in great need with

translation services and even students trying to better their Spanish to communicate with their

families. I know that through my education I will be able to make a difference in my community.

“I have confronted so many obstacles in my life and those haven't stopped me”. Therefore, “I

want to be a mentor to anyone who wants to start their educational journey. As mentioned before,

I know that there is a need for the Spanish in many communities and that language is a great tool

that this language can promote social change”. Not only am I passionate to serve, but also to learn

more about this powerful language and learn more about cultures. I know that I will be successful

and become a highly speaking professional with the knowledge I will acquire here at CSUMB.

This journey has not been easy there have been many lows but more the highs and I am working

hard to achieve what I want. It does not matter what comes to me, I will succeed.
