The solar system consists of the sun and nine planets which are in orbit around it. The solar
System began life 4,500 million years ago when the planets condensed out of an immense
cloud of gas. The nine planets are:
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto
In addition to the planets there are approximately 63 moons and many thousands of asteroids.
Moons orbit the planets while the asteroids orbit the sun. Asteroids vary in size from several
miles across to simple lumps of rock. They are often irregular in shape and have strange orbits.
The planets are divided into two groups. Those planets which orbit close to the sun (e.g.
Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) are called the inner planets. Planets that are further away
from the sun such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus Neptune and Pluto are called the outer planets.
