The Earth

in The Solar
System
Overview
• The Stars are the giant balls of gases
• The Sun, The Planets, Satellites and some other celestial
bodies form the solar system.
• The Stars, The Moon and all those objects shining in the night
sky are called Celestial Bodies
• Tiny celestial bodies in the solar system are called Asteroids
• The small pieces of rocks which move around the sun are
called Meteoroids.
• A Galaxy consists of millions of stars and solar systems
The Stars
• The stars are very big and hot.
• They are made up of gases.
Pole Star • They emit large amount of heat and light.
• Stars in the night sky are similar to the sun.
• They are very very far from us.
• Constellations are patterns formed by stars
such as ursa major and sapt-rishi etc.
• The North star indicates the north
Sapt-Rishi constellation
direction. It is also called the Pole Star.
The Solar System
• The Solar System is the gravitationally bound system of the Sun and the objects that orbits it.
• The sun, eight planets, satellites and some other celestial bodies form the solar system.
• The Solar System also contains asteroid belt, dwarf planet as pluto and meteoroids.
• The Solar system means “The Sun Family”.
• Our Solar System is a part of Milky Way Galaxy (also known as “Akash Ganga”)
The Sun
• The sun is in the centre of the solar system.
• It is huge and made up of extremely hot gases.
• It provides the pulling force that binds the solar
system.
• The sun is the ultimate source of heat and light for
the solar system.
• The tremendous heat of sun is not felt so much by us
because it is far away from us.
• The sun is about 150 million km away from the earth.
The Planets
• There are eight planets in our solar system.
• All the planets move around the sun in fixed paths called orbits.
• Till August 2006, Pluto was also considered a planet. However, in a meeting of the International
Astronomical Union, a decision was taken that Pluto may be called ‘dwarf planets’.

MERCURY VENUS EARTH MARS

Mercury is the closest Venus is the second Earth is the only planet Despite being red, Mars
planet to the Sun planet from the Sun which supports life, I is actually a cold place,
moon 2 moons

JUPITER SATURN URANUS NEPTUNE

It’s the biggest planet in Saturn is a gas giant and Uranus is the second last Neptune is the farthest
the Solar System, 53 has several rings, 53 planet from the Sun, 27 planet from the Sun, 13
moons moons moons moons
Mercury:- One orbit around sun- 88 days, One spin on axis - 59 days.
Venus:- One orbit around sun- 255 days, One spin on axis - 243 days.
Earth:- One orbit around sun- 365 days, One spin on axis - 1 day.
Mars:- One orbit around sun- 687 days, One spin on axis - 1 day.
Jupiter:- One orbit around sun -12 years, One spin on axis – 10 hours.
Saturn:- One orbit around sun – 29y 5m, One spin on axis – 10h 40min.
Uranus:- One orbit around sun - 84 years, One spin on axis -17h 14 min.
Neptune:- One orbit around sun – 164 yrs, One spin on axis -16h 7min.
The Earth
• The earth is the third planet from the sun.
• In size, it is the fifth largest planet.
• It is slightly flattened at the poles.
• Its shape is called Geoid (earth-like shape).
• Earth’s conditions are favourable to
support life and found only on the earth.
• The earth is neither too hot nor too cold.
• It has water and air(consists oxygen etc.)
which are very essential for our survival.
• Earth, appears blue as its two-thirds
surface is water, is called as a blue planet.
The Moon
• A Satellite is a celestial body that moves around the
planets, Earth’s satellite is Moon
• Its diameter is only one-quarter that of the earth.
• The moon moves around the earth in about 27 days.
• It takes exactly the same time to complete one spin.
As a result, only one side of the moon is visible to us.
• It has mountains, plains and depressions on its
surface.
• It is about 3,84,400 km away from us.
• The full moon can be seen once 27 days. A fortnight
later, it cannot be seen as it is a New moon
Asteroids
• There are numerous tiny bodies which also move around the sun
called asteroids.
• They are found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
• Scientists are of the view that asteroids are parts of a planet which
exploded many years back.
Meteoroids
• The small pieces of rocks which move around the sun are called
meteoroids.
• Sometimes these meteoroids come near the earth and tend to drop
upon it.
• During this process due to friction with the air they get heated up
and burn and causes a flash of light.
The Milky Way Galaxy
• A Galaxy is a huge system of billions of stars, and clouds of dust and
gases.
• There are millions of such galaxies that make the Universe.
• Our earth is in the Milky Way Galaxy also Known as Akash Ganga.
• In ancient India, it was imagined to be a river of light flowing in the
sky.
