ABSTRACT In this project report the concept of Artificial Neural Networks is discussed with a brief review of literature. Artificial neural networks are networks of artificial neurons resembling the behavior of biological neuron: In the beginning, the structure of a biological neuron is discussed along with necessary explanations. Various types of activation functions are described along with models of neuron. Neural network architecture are also discussed. The way that individual artificial neurons are interconnected is called the topology or architecture of an artificial neural network, Various types of neural networks such as feed forward and feedback networks are also discussed. Neural network learning paradigms and learning rules are studied. There are mainly two type of learning rules: Supervised and Unsupervised learning rules, Examples of Supervised and Unsupervised learning rules are also explained here, Finally, the approximation of functions using feed forward neural network are discussed. Numerical illus ration of function approximation is also carried out and the results thus obtained are presented,
