DIC score-

The following scoring system can be used to assess the likelihood that a patient has overt
disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).2

1 Does the patient have an underlying disorder known to be associated with DIC?

Yes — proceed
No — do not use this algorithm

2 Order coagulation tests

3 Score coagulation test results:

Platelet count (x109/L)

>100 = 0
<100 = 1
<50 = 2

Fibrin-related marker, eg, D-dimer

no increase = 0
moderate increase = 2
strong increase = 3

Prothrombin time (seconds)

<3 = 0
>3 but <6 = 1
>6 = 2

Fibrinogen (g/L)
>1 = 0
<1 = 1

4 Calculate score by adding together the points allocated above

=5 — compatible with overt DIC (repeat score daily)

<5 — suggestive (not affirmative) of non-overt DIC (repeat score in one or two days)
