Education Specialist
Student Teaching Lesson Planning and Delivery Observation Form
Teacher Candidate: Edwin Hernandez Date:_ February 12
School Site: Out of District Piacement Setting: Olive Crest Academy
Supervisor: Martha OMeara
‘TPEs Observed: No specific TPE was targeted
Documentation of Evidence:
This class is an out of district placement. Students are bused in from
various areas of Orange County and LA county. The class has all boys with
emotional issues. The majority live in foster homes. Three are two or three para
professionals assisting in the class.
For today’s observation, about six of the boys had walked out of the room
during instruction time and were playing outside. They did not return for forty-
five minutes. Therefore there were only four boys participating in the lesson
presented.
For the lesson, Mr. Hernandez read two pages from the Harry Potter
book. The text was also shown on the Elmo. He did stop the reading several times
to asked the students, “Who are the characters in the story and what is the
setting?” After reading the selection, they were assessed by writing down the
setting and characters. A para professional gave bonus points for attending during
this period. | did not see the behavior specialist that was in the room assist in
anyway.
During the lesson, two of the students got up for a drink and two others
were playing with some objects during part of the reading. After the structured
lesson, students were allowed to play with box activities.
When the students from the playground arrived, there was no structured
math period that was organized,
Suggestions: Harry Potter is a very ong book that would more
appropriately be read maybe after (unch for a “down time” of listening. | would
do this type of lesson in a small reading group at the students’ reading ability,
Differentiation and structure needs to be implemented in every lesson. See
my recommendations below.
Teacher Candidate Goal/Focus for Next Observation:
You are having great difficulty with class structure and a behavior
system that the behavioral staff agrees on and that works for you so that you
can teach.
Mr. Hernandez and | met with the principal and she is well aware of the
problem with the staff disagreeing on classroom structure, which should be
lead by Mr, Hernandez. The group of para professionals, the principal, and Mr.Hernandez are meeting this week to agree on the behavior management
system to be used in the classroom.
l emphasized that he is the teacher of record and that all the support
personnel take directions from him, if there is no behavior management plan
implemented, he will not be able to teach.
‘My suggestions:
1,Please read over the two books that I gave you with several behavior
management ideas and the other items | am sending.
2. Make a plan of your behavior class rules and an individual monitoring
plan. | am sending some samples of both, ( Your students are used to you
being a t.a. You need to show them that you are now the teacher.Have
structure organized and materials prepared ahead of time.) Explain to
them how you were first a para professional and now have a new job etc.
this might be a job for them in the future etc. Discuss— why we need rules
and what happens if we don’t have rules— maybe a thinking map. Then
explain the new class rules and individual rules and start implementing
them immediately. They will have a choice each day on what reward they
want to work for. suggest having different break areas around the
room.Get their ideas but possible choices could be a box activity ( you need
more activity boxes), listening to music, word search, art project in one
corner, drawing cars or cartoons am sending, a puzzle, a rocking type chair
(Wal Mart- see picture), silly putty, (see recipe)listening to a story on audio
tape or phone.
.Ideas When class starts, greet them at the door. Maybe use a quick Jack
Harman video on counting to 100 with exercises. Then a calming activity
with breathing exercises or calming music followed by behavior standards
and then group rotation reading. Plan transitions with a timer. music, etc.
4.Plan_reading differentiated lessons carefully, Use the 1st grade materials
you are presently using plus the high frequency word list. For upper
groups, try the materials | gave you.
5. Three math differentiated groups need to be organized and a possible
schedule change needs to be initiated to provide support.
6.For the next observation, | want a detailed lesson plan ( see previous
instructions)sent to me at a minimum of 24 hours before the observation.
For every lesson that | observe, | expect you to address specific TPE’s and
have the paragraph on that TPE and the artifacts to prove your competency
in that area, a 'w 5(nfa?
