Abstract

Accidents and mishaps are unforeseen circumstances that can affect individuals
and groups at any time and in any place. Most accidents are preventable, but the
carelessness or negligence of the involved individuals leads to major injuries and
grievances. Accidents can also occur in the workplace and seriously affect the ability and
health of the involved workers.

Introduction

Safety means protecting ourselves from any danger that may hurt us or endanger
to our lives. Unsafe practice is a great peril to both life and property. A two-wheeler rider
who rides recklessly not only risks his own life, but also the other road users.

School children getting run over by their same school vans or getting knocked
down while crossing the road or getting drowned in die pond or falling from high places
or getting electrocuted and so on; such news appear in the newspapers.

This is because of their lack of knowledge about overall safety, safety means
continuing and healthful living without injury. Safety is freedom from harm or the danger
of harm. The word safety also refers to the precautions people take to prevent accidents,
harm, danger, damage, loss and pollution. Safety also deals with improvement in working
conditions for better health. Management is responsible to provide safe working condition
and individual’s safety.

Safety shouldn’t be about safety; it should be about living and learning. When
safety is made into some bureaucratic, legal or club exercise, it has lost the plot. This is
why it is more preferable to talk about risk than about safety. If safety is some engineering
exercise of shifting objects to keep some system clean, then we think we have lost the
plot. If safety is about trying to memorize sections of the Act so that we can dominate and
rule others, then we have lost the plot. If safety is a power trip so that we can bully others
to ‘keep them safe for their own good’, then we have lost the plot.
 Safety should be about none of these things. When we put learning first, people
first, relationships first, respect first and living first, then we might get to the heart of safety.

Now we are living in the 21st century in this modern world, there are so many jobs
to do. Among them engineering takes an important place in the modern world. It is
because the need of engineers is very important nowadays. Engineering is a growing
industry that gives competitive pay as well as new opportunities to develop and work with
different technologies.

Engineers must have to use science, critical thinking and mathematics to develop
ideas, product and technologies, often to make the life easier and more efficient.
Engineers specialize in one branch of the field, such as, electrical, civil or mechanical that
is our field. The world is changing every day, and engineers are the ones behind so much
of this thing.

We all heard about this code word “SAFETY FIRST”. Safety is very important in
every field. Safety Engineering is an Engineering discipline which assures that
engineered systems provide acceptable levels if safety. It deals with accident preventions,
reducing the risk that is associated with human error and deriving safety benefits from
engineered systems and designs. So, engineers will have to face several problems in
their working places. So, it is important to utilize the principles of safety engineering, such
as hazard control in the preplanning designs and layouts of manufacturing.

Safety concepts of engineering provides us the structure of both safety and

industrial design engineers to elaborate intrinsically safety equipment, systems, process
and facilities. It is the key point for eliminating hazards.
 To finalize this requirement, we’ve conducted online interviews to safety
Engineers, officers or practitioners about how safety goes with their jobs.

John Clifford L. Talabis who lives in Mahabang Parang, Batangas City, currently
working in Readycon Trading Corp. as Safety Officer 2 accepted our interview request.

He choses a career in safety because he said that it is hugely rewarding and even
has the potential to save lives because as expected in all industries there will always be
possible hazards and accidents. Him as a safety officer 2 educates people to eliminate
those hazards. He also said that as safety officers they should know the process and
manufacturing of their company so that they know how to implement safety precautions
and practices to possible hazards that may happen.

According to him, a successful safety improvement has more signages, requesting

nurse and first aiders. He also experienced a lot of work related injuries during his work
that are mostly minor injuries and as a solution they call for first aid medical treatment
and they investigate about what had really happen and why does that kind of accident
occur and after that is to give recommendation to workers to avoid reoccurrence.

They implement safety procedure when they see possible hazards and it was
successful when it results to zero accidents and all their workers can go home safe. He
also said that listening is a good aspect to avoid hazards. He also comes up with his
problems by asking questions to the persons who has more experience than him so he
could catch up new knowledge and also by attending seminars.

Safety Officer 2

 Another interviewee is Kim Aldea Lumanglas who currently lives in Gulod Itaas
Batangas City is a Safety Officer 1 and working at Universal Robina Corp., Simlong
Batangas City. We personally know him because we had the chance to work with him
during our intern to their company.
 He choses to be in the line with HSE job simply because he cares more about the
health of the workers, safety of the workers and environment. He said that knowing how
their company works is an essential part for a safety officer like him, specially when it
comes to Job Hazard Analysis for risk assessments.

He said that he can tell if there is an improvement to his job, if the people under
him are more aware of what is important than before. Giving them trainings and
orientations makes them more aware of it.

Seeing them work safely even in basic job/activities makes a big difference
compare to our first month in the company. Leaving a great impact on workers and
influencing them to work safely even they’re not under supervision of superiors. That also
makes a work places safe and a safe work places is a peace of mind for us safety officers.

Accidents/incidents really do happen, that’s why we have to predict all

possible/potential hazards and injuries. So, in the time of occurrences, we are ready for
immediate actions.

With the guidance of hierarchy of controls, we could have controlled every possible
danger that might harm the workers and even the plant. Preventing the occurrence of
harm is much better than applying solution after investigation.

“What do you think is the number one priority for a safety officer?“ he answered,
everyone’s life, should be the top priority of a safety officer.

For students that might pursue this line of career, never let a single day ends
without learning a thing related or not to health, safety and environment. If you want a
good change for you future companies, take it slowly.

A gradual change is still a good change. It’s okay to give a good consideration but
not always. On implementation of rules and regulations, always make sure you’re in-line
with the updates.

Conclusion

A good engineer will create a good society and create a safe society. It is
possible that a doctor can lose only one life at a time, which means it is more likely to
occur during a surgical procedure, but when an engineering department works in a
construction project, the whole picture is still available when it comes to overall human
lives. That is why security is a vital in construction field. Engineers should consider a
number of factors that may affect the safety of a situation or product, including design,
technical safety, material reliability, legislation and human factors. Engineers use
knowledge they have gain within a specific industry in order to make things work and
solve problems, whether that be with transports, medicine, entertainment or environment.
Engineering is behind everything and engineering is one of the most important job which
plays a major role in many industries. Keeping safety in industries will make a better
future.

Always remember Safety comes in a can, I can, you can, we can be safe. Lead
the way, safety today.
