Apple Inc.

(Sustainability analysis)
“Making without taking sounds impossible. But it’s our goal.”- goes the tag line of Apple Inc. Apple
wants to achieve this goal by inventing more efficient ways to recycle and replacing fossil fuels with
renewable sources of energy.

Some of the concrete measures taken by Apple include reduction in carbon footprint, transition to
renewable energy for all Apple facilities worldwide, aim to help partners transition to renewable energy,
elimination of harmful chemicals like PVC, mercury phthalates etc., production of devices that consume
less power, reduction in material mining etc.

Apple continuously innovates to reuse recovered scrap in the best possible manner. It has developed a
custom aluminum alloy. It has also prioritized use of certain materials based on its custom material
impact profile. The use of technology to make reuse and recycling more efficient is rampant in Apple.
The design innovation at Apple primarily helps in producing energy efficient devices. Apple ensures
evaluation of chemicals to ensure they are safe for human health and environment safety.

Areas Highlights
Climate Change Carbon footprint gone down by 35% since 2015
Average energy used by products reduced by 70% since 2008
Helping suppliers switch to clean energy (emissions saved equivalent
to electricity requirement of 6L houses)
Resources 100% wood fibre used for packaging is from recycled and renewable
sources
Use of technology like Daisy, the disassembly robot, which can extract
tungsten and aluminum alloys from products under recycling
Use of recycled tin that prevented mining of 29K metric tons of tin ore
in 2019
Smarter Chemistry Analyzed composition of more than 75% of devices to ensure non-use
(material safety) of harmful chemicals
100% supplier assembly sites adopted safer cleaning
Eliminated beryllium and switched to safer metal alloys

Apple uses an environmental report card for each of its

devices to measure its impact on the carbon footprint
and to gauge if it is environment-friendly and uses safe
materials.

Apple’s vision is to achieve a circular economy by

making products using only renewable resources or
recycled material.

In order to ensure transparency, Apple obtains third

party verification and assurance for its data on
environmental impact which includes greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, paper use, waste and
water impacts of data centers, stores and offices. Apple works with NGOs and other partners to ensure
labor and human rights, promote safety and environmental protection. Apple has a dedicated team
known as ‘The Office of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives’ that sets goals, draws strategies,
engages stakeholders and communicates progress.
