Fashion stereotypes

In our day we have to make a lot of choices about ourselves, one of them is what are
we going to wear. We Are always looking forward to being accepted but dressing in
a way that represents us. We can dress however we want but, are we really free to
wear whatever we want? , we are constantly trying to fit into the "patterns" that
others (and ourselves) dictate, and many times we fall into the typical prejudices and
stereotypes that we so hate.

Without a doubt, prejudices and stereotypes are a manifestation of the distorted

vision of reality on the part of the human being.
When you observe someone from your own prejudices or when you are seen from
this perspective, there is no objectivity in observation. An act of inner freedom and
vital wisdom is being willing not to pigeonhole these fuzzy stereotypes.

We asked a few questions about how people feel about themselves and their opinion
on big brands like Victoria’s Secret, Calvin Klein, and H&M. Those are very famous
marks that have a lot of influence in the teens now these days so they may influence
the way they feel about their way of dress and their bodies.

There is a study about body shaming in 2017, and the results were horrifying. 94% of
teenage girls have been body shamed and teenage boys 64%.

1. Do you like your body?

60% of the people answered that they liked their body

while 40% answered that they were not comfortable
with their body
2. Do you like the way you dress?

93% of people answered yes to this question and

only 7% said they didn't like their way of dress.

3. Do you identify with any style of clothing? If you do, which one?

88% do not feel identified with any style but the 22%
who do feel identify give examples like: Vintage,
bohemian, chic, artsy, and more.

4. Which brands do you consume the most? (clothe, perfume, shoes)

Most people consume H&M, Forever 21, Zara, Nike, and Adidas.

5. What do you think about “Victoria’s Secret?

A small part of the interviewees sees Victoria´s Secret as a clothes brand of high
quality. With very thin models that "represent the beauty or perfection of women".

On the other hand, people criticize this brand of being overrated and for making their
models follow an extreme diet. All of this makes teenagers feel insecure and leads to
eating disorders.

6. What do you think about H&M?

In general, there are good opinions about this brand, for example, that it is cheap
and cute. But there are also comments that there are not many sizes in clothing.

7. What do you think about Calvin Klein?

Almost the total of the interviewees criticizes that Calvin Klein is more expensive that
it deserves.

8. When you are walking down the street, have you ever felt the need to
change your clothes for a comment or someone else’s opinion?

The 54% have felt that way while 46% have not
9. Do you feel free to wear what you like?

70% of people feel confident and free to wear

their type of clothes and 30% don´t.

10. Have you ever criticized someone for the

way she/he dress?

50% of the interviewees confirm having criticized another person for the way they
dress.

With the surveys that we did, we can say that today people feel more
confident and safe about themselves.
But maybe it’s just here, in other countries, there are more stereotypes about
clothes, for example: In Islam, people have to follow a style determined. A
dress. At the very least, the garment should cover the shoulders. Long-
sleeved garments (and trousers) are preferred. Use a headscarf to cover the
hair.

So we asked ourselves again, are we really free to wear whatever we want?

Conclusion
We were surprised and satisfied with the interviews. We thought that most of the
people in the interviews will say that they don't like their bodies or that they don't feel
safe.
The idea of choosing this topic was to see if the problem of body shaming or the
criticism about fashion stereotypes was still being thing of conversation.
It is very important that people feel comfortable and happy with themself, And also
think in a way of eliminating prejudice and stereotypes.

Solution
It is important to make us reflect deeply on our mindset and preconceptions. Think if
someone is criticizing you for the way you dress, would you like it?
Also, families play a fundamental role in the personality of the teenager, to teach
their children to be emphatic about people around.
