ART OF FANTASTIC

VOYAGE
By Jennifer Bricknell
Inspirations
My main inspirations of this project,
stylistically was the aesthetics of
psychedelics, often associated with
magic mushrooms. Which seemed a
good chance to make a lot of visual
metaphors to make the animation
more interesting. In my previous
education I have always struggled to
engage with things such as science
when the visuals and the overall
explanation and teaching is basic
and boring and doesn’t stimulate a
lot of senses. I didn’t want this
animation just to state facts with a
boring scientific model animated on
screen.
Concept Art
◦ I did several pieces of varying concept art, some of which contained more realistic art and others less so,
some more abstract than others, but all of them mostly had a very bright contrasting colour palette.
Orthographs
These Orthographs were quite
basic and it came back to haunt
me when modelling however I
made some quick fixes when I
was texturing the mushrooms.
Because both the mushroom
and the background were
yellow, so I changed it to a
purple on the model later on.
The Happy Pills are a set of pills to
be animated as a metaphor for
spores to keep with the theme of
psychedelics. I didn’t change
the colour of these as they have
a purple outline and are
distinguishable.
Full Light
Renders
In the animation the lights were
supposed to pulse but due to
the animation being
playblasted and not rendered I
couldn’t give the desired look. I
made the mushroom glow in
the dark sections, I really liked
this idea as it was linked to
bodily functions and breathing.
Which I found help emulate the
idea of a drug trip, as was
intended. An idea of both
chaos and tranquility within that
chaos.
