JOURNEY TO THE HISTORY OF VOLKSWAGEN

The company was founded in 1937 and it was then known as Gesellschaftzur Vorbereitung des Deutschen
Volkswagens mbH. Today it is the largest car company in Europe.

On may 28th, 1937 the Gesellschaftzur Vorbereitung des

Deutschen Volkswagens mbH. Company was founded and it
was renamed as Volkswagen on September 16th, 1938.

During the Second World War, the production of Volkswagen was switched to military weapons, which
included more than twenty thousand laborers, as well as prisoners of war which were forced to work with
the company.

After the end of Second World War, i.e. 1945, the

responsibility for Volkswagen were given to British Military
Government. And the massive production of Volkswagen
Beetle was started under the supervision of Major Ivan Hirst.

The second production called Type 2 went into production in

Volkswagen on March 8th, 1950. It was the Volkswagen bus,
which is today known as VW Bully. It was at high demand due
to availability of multifunctional capabilities in the car. It was
considered as setting down the roots of today`s Volkswagen
commercial vehicle brand. By the end of 1955, more than one
million production of Volkswagen Beetle had taken place.

Volkswagen broke the record of Ford Company`s model T

which was also knows as Tin Lizzy, with its VW Beetle with 15,007,034 units assembled. This took place
on February 17th, 1972.
L ater in 1973, the new Volkswagen Passat was produced
which was the first model of its kind with the front wheel
drive facility and water cooled 4 cylinder engine which could
go up to 110 bhp.

Later in 1974, the company produced the new model called

Volkswagen Golf at its Wolfsburg plant. It was an ultimate hit
and the same year company produced the sporty Scirocco,
which was continued to be manufactured till 1981.

It was June 1983, when the second generation Gold Began its step in the market. The car was assembled
with automated assembly process and in the specially erected assembly hall, designated Hall 54; robots
were hired for the first time in vehicle manufacture.

The new car called Volkswagen Lupo 3l TDI was launched in

July 1999. It offered fuel consumption of just three liters per
100 kilometers. Volkswagen again made an automotive
history that very time.

Volkswagen`s mass production of Touareg in august 2002,

moved the company into an entirely new market segment. The vehicle was a luxury class off-road
vehicle,
an SUV.
In 2003, the Volkswagen produced its fifth
generation car called Golf, which was advanced in its
design and engineering.

The Advanced VW vehicles: -

Clean Diesel:-

Since 2003, Volkswagen has been selling the low

Sulfur Diesel-powered engine in the European
Market. The company has developed TDI i.e.
Turbocharged Direct Injection Technology for
diesel engines. The company suits itself ideal for environment conscious consumers, with its
advanced vehicles. One of the vehicle that has been promoting is Jetta TDI, which has a 16
valve, 4 cylinder common rail direct injection engine which reduces emissions by 90%.

Advanced Ethanol Vehicles

Volkswagen earlier used to produce and sold

ethanol vehicles but the production was
discontinued after they were substituted by the
modern technology of flexible-fuel vehicles. The
largest production of neat ethanol vehicles were
started producing in 1987, which was the result of
several factors. The main factor among all was the
sharp decline in gasoline prices as the result of the
1980s oil glut.

Flexible-Fuel Vehicle

The first Brazilian commercial flexible fuel vehicle, Gol 1.6 Total Flex was launched by
Volkswagen on March 2003. It stopped the manufacture of gasoline-only vehicles in 2006. By
March 2009, Volkswagen has attained the milestone mark of two million flexible-fuel vehicles
produced since 2003.

Electric Vehicles

The two door E-UP! Electric car was debuted at

the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009.the plan
for the production to be started is after three
years, i.e. 2013. It uses a 60 kilowatts all-
integrated drive electric motor, mounted at the
front to drive the front wheels.

Hybrid Electric vehicles

Volkswagen and Sanyo have joint hands to develop a battery system for hybrid electric vehicles.
The company says that Golf (car model) is the ideal vehicle to go hybrid as it has recently been
awarded with the “Auto environment Certificate” by the Oko-Trend Institute for Environmental
Research. The vehicle was considered as the most environmentally friendly vehicle of 2007. The
company intends to have all future models for its car to have a Hybrid option.

OBJECTIVE OF THE TRAINING

The objective of any industrial training is to experience and understand real life situations in
industrial organizations and their related environments and accelerating our learning process, to
use our knowledge in realistic world.

It helped me to understand about the formal and informal relations as well as working in a team.

It gave me a field to express my ideas and my capabilities in a perfect working environment.

It helped me a lot in implementing practically what I have learned in my University. It also

helped me a lot in developing my technical skills and to prepare myself for a work environment
and face the real world professional situations in later period of my life.
WORK DONE DURING THE TRAINING PERIOD

VAS: - VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC MEASURING AND INFORMATION SYSTEM

The vehicle analysis system connects itself to the vehicle through USB-Hub.

The software used is the collaboration of Microsoft Windows and Siemens.\the Vas for VW has
built in diagnostic for Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi and Seat Motors.

It is portable as well as easily operated by touch screen facility. The VAS computer is directly
connected with the external devices such as mouse, keyboard and printer. It can have direct
online communication for vehicle device troubleshooting with the Volkswagen main plant at
Germany.

The Volkswagen vehicles have software based utility systems, which are operated by computers
called VAS, also known as vehicle analysis system. The version of the software which is used
currently is GB/V17.00.00 for date 10/02/2010.

It self diagnostics the vehicle and the report is obtained on the computer screen, which shows
whether the device has fault or it is in perfect working condition. If the is a present of fault, the
VAS has the online communication with Volkswagen Germany and gives the proper solution to
the vehicle on board.

Since the software is shared only by the company branches, it is very safe and fault free. Also it
is trustful by the costumers all over the world.

WHEEL ALIGNMENT MACHINE

There was a problem in wheel alignment of a Volkswagen Polo, which was solved by the wheel
alignment machine.( figure no. )
I learned that the wheel alignment machine is a 3-D machine, which runs on software. The
software used here was Visualiner Pro 32. The name of the machine used here is John Bean
Alignment Machine.

It is an automatic running machine which basically works on camera system. After proper
guidance, I learned to operate the machine software to check and balance the wheel alignment.

Working of the machine: -

The machine works on camera based detection system. The reflection plates are attached to the
wheels of the vehicle and the software is run. The machine`s software connects itself to the
vehicle reflection plates through Bluetooth connection. The 3-dimensional digital output gives
the perfect alignment to the vehicle.

Types of wheel alignment: -

The three kinds of alignment that are basically checked are Caster, Camber and Toe of both front
and rear wheels.

The initial values of the alignment are first noticed. The specifications are considered which goes
from minimum value to the maximum value. The wheel alignment is set between the specified
values and the final values are obtained. The report is printed as shown in figure no. ______

Which is also called Vehicle Alignment Report.

GLOW PLUG

Glow plug is an electronic device which is used to on the engine of the car, even when the
battery is down.

Due to this, the engine can be on, even if it is very cool, in just little moment. It heats up the
engine to 1000 degree C per second. It has a diesel spray on plug. It operates only on 4 volts of
battery supply. Therefore, down battery does not blocks the engine start, due to glow plug.
THE INVERTER

The 230 volts 50 Hz European socket is installed in Volkswagen vehicles. An inverter is

formally connected to the socket, is installed in the vehicle to generate the alternating voltage.
This unit is located in the rear centre console instead of the cup holder.

The 230 V socket is designed without an earthing contact and can be operated at a maximum
continuous output of 150W, which can give the peak output up to 300W.

Voltage can be drawn from the socket when the engine is running. Beside the engine speed
signal line, a voltage supply and a ground connection link the inverter to the vehicle electrical
system. Galvanic separation from the alternating voltage level has been implemented.
