MATERIAL NAME

Ultrachrome® 28% Cr, Low C (Heat Treated) WMD CODE: A49

COLOUR GENERAL DESCRIPTION
White Alloy A49 is a heat treated corrosion resistant
MATERIAL TYPE white iron suitable for low pH corrosion
duties, where erosive wear is also a problem.
Low Carbon, High Chromium White Iron The alloy is particularly suitable for Flue Gas
Desulphurisation (FGD) applications, where
RELATED STANDARDS the pH is greater than 4. The alloy can also be
None used in other mildly acidic environments.

TYPICAL MICROSTRUCTURE
Most wet-end parts can be manufactured in
The microstructure of A49 consists of a alloy A49.
hypoeutectic structure consisting of primary The most common parts are as follows:
austenite dendrites surrounded by eutectic Impellers, volute liners, throatbushes and
M7C3 carbides and precipitated secondary frame plate liner inserts.
carbides in a matrix of retained austenite
partially transformed to martensite. The
corrosion resistance of the alloy is controlled
by the level of chromium in the ferrous
matrix. The good erosion resistance of this SERVICE RECOMMENDATIONS
alloy is provided by the hard carbide phase. Alloy A49 was developed specifically for the
FGD Market, and offers good
erosion/corrosion resistance. A49 can be used
in weak sulphuric and nitric acids, and
sodium hydroxide between a pH range of 3 to
14.
