Emblems are gestures that have a specific agreed-on meaning within a given culture.

Illustrators are the most common type of gesture and are used to illustrate the verbal message
they accompany.

“Call me”
“We’re late”

“What time is it”

Adaptors are unintentional movements that indicate internal states typically related to arousal
or anxiety.
Nail-biting: sign of emotional or mental stress. Show up in people who are nervous, anxious
or feeling down

Body movement and Posture

Posture is the position of a body while standing or sitting.

Consider how your perceptions of people are affected by the way they sit, walk, stand
up or hold their head.

The way you move and carry yourself communicates a wealth of information to the
world.

There are two basic groups of body language posture: OPEN/CLOSED and
FORWARD/BACK

The posture groups combine to create four basic modes, they are: responsive, reflective,
combative and fugitive
Responsive:

ENGAGED

Leaning forward

Open body

Open arms

Open hands

EAGER

Leaning forward

Open legs

Feet under chair

On toes

READY TO AGREE

Closes papers

Puts pen down,

Lays hands flat on table

REFLECTIVE:

LISTENING

Tilts head

Makes lots of eye contact

Has high blink rate

EVALUATING

Sucks glasses or pencil

Strokes chin

Looks up and right

Crosses legs or puts ankles on knee

ATTENTIVE
Smiles

Stands with feet apart

FUGITIVE:

COMBATIVE:

Stares

AGGRESSIVE:
Points finger

Leans forward in a threatening way

DEFIANT:

LYING:

Touches face

Put hand over mouth

Pulls ear

Looks down

Glances at you of corner of eyes

The way you look at someone can communicate many things, including interest, affection, hostility
or attraction.

Eye contact is also important in maintaining the flow of conversation and for gauging the other
person’s response.

Lack of eye contact may be perceived as rudeness, indifference, nervousness, or dishonesty.

Example:

-Direct eye contract: show confidence

-Looking downwards: listening carefully or guilty

-Single raised eyebrow: doubting

-Both raised eyebrows: admiring
