Listen the audio and complete the gaps (from 1 – 14) with the following phrasal.
Then read carefully the opinions of Laurie, Angela, Frank, Gary and Burt about
Friendship.

Laurie: To me, a friend is someone who To be physically around

you when you need them, someone who cares. Not like your
parents, though. Parents are either picking on you, or Telling you
off, so sometimes it is a pain. To a friend, you can always Open up.
That’s another way they’re different from your parents.

Angela: I agree with Laurie, but personally I don’t think a friend has
Stands by all the time. I have friends that I haven’t seen in years, but I know if we get
together, we’ll Gotten on right where we Left off.

Frank: I think a friend is that old pal you’ve always Backed me up. I often look back on my
schooldays and I think of the funny things my friends and I did together. As I see it, the friends
you make in youth are friend to keep for a lifetime.

Gary: Well, what are friends for? My friends and I talk about movies, sports or politics. I don’t
Go around telling them my troubles and I don’t particularly want to hear theirs. I believe that if
you don’t expect too much from people, you won’t be Let down.

Burt: I just wanna say I used to agree with Gary. I had buddies, not friends until my wife and I
Split up. That was the worst thing that had ever happened to me, and I don’t know how I’d
have Gotten through it without a couple of my fellows, who suddenly Turned into friends. I
certainly wasn’t a very good company, but they spent a lot of time with me. I felt I would have
Broken down if they hadn’t Pick up.
 Which opinion do you agree the most? Which opinion do you agree the least?

The opinion that I agree with the most is that of Angela, a friend is the one who is there but
they do not have to be together all the time, I also have friends who spend time without
seeing them our relationship remains the same.

I do not agree with the opinion of Gary since I think that a friend if it is to tell him the problems
and to listen to his, that is what the friendship of listening, helping and supporting is all about.

 Give your own point of view taking your justifications from the last paragraphs. Discuss
with your classmate.

After discussing the last few paragraphs with my classmate, the conclusion was reached that
friends should be people who, despite the distance, can advise you, who, despite the
problems, know how to solve them and follow through, who can celebrate their friendship in
the company of their family and not just with the eccentricities with which people are used to
celebrating because synonymous with celebrating is not alcohol, synonymous with
celebrating is sharing and enjoying.
