To overcome the feeling of alienation illness often induces scarring patients and their loved
ones, The Hasso Plattner Institute of Design conducted a two day course to help
understand the emergency room from the perspective of the patient or the family. Aim is to
help establish a sense of empathy and in turn, improve patient care.

EDUCATION
Virtual reality changing the landscape of classroom education with more players being
added. For instance, now virtual frog dissection is being encouraged as part of a Biology
class (more ethical, less messy).
Teachers are also adopting the design thinking approach which can be seen via a recent
“Shadow a Student” challenge wherein teachers and head academicians shadow their
students undertaking varied activities such as test taking, assignment completion etc.
This in turn, helps them adapt their teaching methodologies.

ENTERTAINMENT
HBO was the first ever brand to introduce the idea of satellite and cable independent
subscription based entertainment. HBO employed design thinking approach to revamp their
product and user experience vision. They crafted the first-of-its-kind HBO original shows
which were based on customer behaviours. Design thinking helped HBO in delivering
consumer inspired products. HBO implemented iterative prototyping and saved
considerable expenses while launching products.

TRAVEL
Airbnb’s rise in the travel industry was aided by the design thinking approach. In late 2000s,
the company’s sales were dropping, the founders began looking for flaws in their business
strategy. Behaving as customers themselves when they viewed their listings, they realized
that the property images were of low quality and obscure and therefore they didn’t
themselves feel the want to make a booking. Post replacement of these photos with high
quality professional images, their revenues doubled within a week in the year 2009.
