CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INDUSTRY PROFILE

American inventor John Wesley Hyatt, together with his brother Isaiah, patented the
first injection moulding machine in 1872.[6] This machine was relatively simple compared to
machines in use today: it worked like a large hypodermic needle, using a plunger to inject plastic
through a heated cylinder into a mould. The industry progressed slowly over the years, producing
products such as collar stays, buttons, and hair combs.
Injection moulding is used to create many things such as wire spools, packaging, bottle caps,
automotive parts and components, toys, pocket combs, some musical instruments (and parts of
them), one-piece chairs and small tables, storage containers, mechanical parts (including gears),
and most other plastic products available today. Injection moulding is the most common modern
method of manufacturing plastic parts; it is ideal for producing high volumes of the same object
The German chemists Arthur Eichengrün and Theodore Becker invented the first soluble forms
of cellulose acetate in 1903, which was much less flammable than cellulose nitrate.[7] It was
eventually made available in a powder form from which it was readily injection moulded. Arthur
Eichengrün developed the first injection moulding press in 1919. In 1939, Arthur Eichengrün
patented the injection moulding of plasticised cellulose acetate.
The industry expanded rapidly in the 1940s because World War II created a huge demand for
inexpensive, mass-produced products.[8] In 1946, American inventor James Watson Hendry built
the first screw injection machine, which allowed much more precise control over the speed of
injection and the quality of articles produced.[9] This machine also allowed material to be mixed
before injection, so that coloured or recycled plastic could be added to virgin material and mixed
thoroughly before being injected. In the 1970s, Hendry went on to develop the first gas-assisted
injection moulding process, which permitted the production of complex, hollow articles that
cooled quickly. This greatly improved design flexibility as well as the strength and finish of
manufactured parts while reducing production time, cost, weight and waste. By 1979, plastic
production overtook steel production, and by 1990, aluminium molds were widely used in
injection molding.[10] Today, screw injection machines account for the vast majority of all
injection machines.
The plastic injection moulding industry has evolved over the years from producing combs and
buttons to producing a vast array of products for many industries including automotive, medical,
aerospace, consumer products, toys, plumbing, packaging, and construction

7
Plastic moulding is the process of shaping plastic using a rigid frame or mould. The technique
allows for the creation of objects of all shapes and sizes with huge design flexibility for both
simple and highly complex designs. A popular manufacturing option, plastic moulding
techniques are responsible for many car parts, containers, signs and other high volume items.

Plastics are synthetically produced non-metallic compounds. It can be molded into various forms
and hardened for commercial use. Plastic molding products can be seen everywhere. Examples
are jars, protective caps, plastic tubes, grips, toys, bottles, cases, accessories, kitchen utensils and
a lot more.

Even the keyboard and the mouse that you use are made through plastic molding. Even the
plastic parts of the chair that you are sitting on are created this way.

The basic idea in plastic molding is inserting molten liquid plastic into a ready shaped mold, for
example the mold of a bottle. It will be then allowed to cool, then the mold will be removed to
reveal the plastic bottle.

Plastic molding can also custom-mold a wide variety of plastic products including: garden pots,
cabinets, office trays and boxes, barriers, barricades and traffic signage and displays for product
and marketing promotions.

If you are planning to go into plastic molding business, you should first know the different
processes. Choose from a plastic molding process that fits your budget, your expertise, and your
resources. Here are basic definitions of various methods of plastic molding.

1.3 NATURE OF BUSSINESS

Injection moulding  is a manufacturing  process for producing parts by injecting molten
material into a mould. Injection moulding can be performed with a host of materials mainly
including metals  (for which the process is called die-casting,  glasses,  elastomers confections,
and most commonly  thermoplastic and thermosetting  polymers. Material for the part is fed into
a heated barrel, mixed (Using a helical shaped screw), and injected (Forced) into a mould cavity.
where it cools and hardens to the configuration of the cavity. After a product is designed, usually
by an industrial designer  or an engineer, moulds are made by a mould-maker (or toolmaker)
from metal usually either steel  or aluminium and precision-machined  to form the features of
the desired part. Injection moulding is widely used for manufacturing a variety of parts, from the
smallest components to entire body panels  of cars . Advances in 3D printing  technology,
using photopolymers  which do not melt during the injection moulding of some lower
temperature thermoplastics, can be used for some simple injection moulds.
Parts to be injection moulded must be very carefully designed to facilitate the moulding process;
the material used for the part, the desired shape and features of the part, the material of the
mould, and the properties of the moulding machine must all be taken into account. The
versatility of injection moulding is facilitated by this breadth of design considerations and
possibilities.

3.2 HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

As per Armstrong (1997) Human resource management is defined as “a strategic approach to

acquiring, developing, managing, motivating and gaining the commitment of the organization’s
key resource — the people who work in and for it.”

In general, human resource management is concerned with hiring, motivating and maintaining

workforce within businesses.

Functions of Human Resource Management Includes:

· Managerial Functions

· Operative Functions

Managerial Function Includes:

1. Planning

One of the primary function where number & type of employees needed to accomplish
organizational goals are determined. Research forms core HRM planning which also helps
management to collect, analyze and identify current plus future needs within the organization.

21
2. Organizing

Organization of the task is another important step. Task is allocated to every member as per their
skills and activities are integrated towards a common goal.

3. Directing

This includes activating employees at different levels and making them contribute maximum
towards organizational goal. Tapping maximum potentialities of an employee via constant
motivation and command is a prime focus.

4. Controlling

Post planning, organizing and directing, performance of an employee is checked, verified and
compared with goals. If actual performance is found deviated from the plan, control measures are
taken.

Types of Recruitment

Recruitment can be divided into 2 types:

 1) Internal Recruitment

 2) External Recruitment

Companies have 2 option recruiting candidates’ i.e. internal sources and external sources.

 Methods of Internal Recruitment

 Selecting top talents within an organization to higher level,

 Promotions,

 Internal Advertisement

 Temporary employees to contractual period

 Contract employees to temporary

22
 Temporary employees to permanent

 Retired employees for freelancer position

Sources of External Recruitment

 Job portals

 Newspaper Ads and Magazines

 Website

 Campus recruitment

 Direct Walk In

 Recruitment agencies

 Internal employee referrals.

3.3 MARKETING MANAGEMENT

Management is the art of getting the requisite work done efficaciously. It includes planning,
organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling to ensure proper functioning of an organization.
Whereas, marketing refers to ascertaining and transmuting consumer needs into goods and
services. Hence, Marketing Management is the process of managing the marketing
activities of any firm. Managing various aspects of the market such as branding, labeling,
advertising and other promotional activities comes under Marketing Management.

It is the task of the marketing manager to ensure that the marketing activities are managed
properly. For this, a manager performs different tasks.

Responsibilities of Marketing Department

Setting Marketing Strategy

23
The senior member of the marketing department takes responsibility for setting marketing
strategy in line with overall company strategy and objectives. The strategy may be to increase
share in a specific market sector, for example, to enter a new sector, or to open a new channel of
distribution, such as the Internet, to reach a wider geographical market. The marketing
department reaches agreement on strategy with the board or senior management team before
planning campaigns in detail.

Importance of Market Research

Market research is a key responsibility for the marketing department. Research helps the
company identify market opportunities and gain a better understanding of customer needs. It also
helps them understand competitors’ strengths and weaknesses so they can take action to protect
business with existing customers or win business from weaker competitors.

Internal or External Product Development

The marketing department works with internal or external product development teams to develop
new products or improve existing ones. The department analyzes sales of existing products and
identifies gaps in the product range where there may be opportunities for the company.
Marketing employees provide development teams with information on customer needs and
preferences to help them identify the features or improvements to incorporate in new products.
Later in the product development process, the marketing department sets prices and prepares
plans to launch the product.

Communications and Promotional Materials

Marketing departments plan campaigns and develop communications material to promote

products and services to customers and prospects. Depending on their available budgets, they
may plan advertising campaigns, develop e-mail marketing programs, create promotional content
for the company website, write press releases or product publications, such as product leaflets,

24
company brochures, product data sheets or customer newsletters. They may write and design the
promotional material if they have skills within the department or they may appoint advertising
agencies or design firms to produce the work.

Sales Team Support

Cooperation between the sales and marketing departments can improve sales performance and
speed up business growth. The marketing department can provide sales teams with high-quality
leads by running advertisements that include a reply mechanism, such as a coupon or telephone
number, or by encouraging visitors to the company website to register their details in return for a
free newsletter or special report. Marketing also prepares presentations for the sales team and
supplies them with stocks of promotional material to give to customers and prospects.

Exhibitions, Seminars and Events

In some companies, marketing departments are responsible for organizing events, such as
exhibitions, seminars, sales conferences or customer hospitality events. They plan the logistics of
the event, booking exhibition booths or meeting facilities, for example, and provide event
material, such as displays, presentations or handouts. They also promote external events to
customers and prospects to ensure successful attendance.

Functions of Marketing Department

Function One: Product Delivery

One function of logistics marketing is finding out who your customer is and how to get the
product or service to the customer. Each customer can have individualized needs so the
logistical services provided may vary from customer to customer. Regardless of these
differences, the customers expects 100 percent conformance and assured reliability at all times
with every transaction. The goals of this aspect of marketing logistics include filling the order,
on-time delivery, precise invoicing and zero damage.

Function Two: Price

25
An organization bases pricing decisions on both internal and external factors. Marketing logistics
must recognize price drivers. The profile of the customer, the product and the type of order are
factors that drive the price. These changes are not typically controlled by marketing logistics.
However, marketing logistics must react to these factors and understand how the factors affect
customers’ decisions. Discounts for quantities and the related logistical cost structure can impact
the price the customer will ultimately pay for the product or service. Additional factors driving
price include the shipping costs based on the size, weight and distance the organization will ship
the item. Further, the size of the manufacturing run, labor costs and the types, quantities and
quality of the materials used in the manufacturing process can affect price.

Function Three: Promotion

Promotion is another important aspect of an organization’s marketing logistics process. When
bringing a product to market, the organization must coordinate the logistics of the various
marketing materials. For example, the art department might design the artwork for the product's
box and an outside supplier might manufacture the boxes with the artwork. Marketing logistics
can help to ensure that all of these entities work together and produce the marketing materials
needed to sell the product.

Function Four: Place

The function of place in marketing logistics allows the organization to simplify the transactions
between a logistics provider and the customer. The organization must execute logistics in such
a way that the customer is not aware of the complexities involved in the logistics process. For the
customer, the output is always more important than the process. The organization should,
therefore, never expose the backroom processes involved with logistics delivery to the customer.

Also the location of the factory, warehouse and customer can greatly impact the marketing
logistics process by increasing or reducing costs. For example, locating a factory in Mexico
might reduce the labor costs associated with a product. However, at the same time locating the
factory in Mexico might increase the shipping costs and negate any cost savings.

26
3.4 OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT
Operations management (OM) is the business function responsible for managing the process of
creation of goods and services. It involves planning, organizing, coordinating,
and controlling all the resources needed to produce a company's goods and services. The six key
functions of business operations discussed in this paper are financial, production,

The Plastic Molding Processes:

Injection Molding
In Injection Molding, melted plastic is forced into a mold cavity. Once cooled, the mold can be
removed. This plastic molding process is commonly used in mass-production or prototyping of a
product. Injection molding machines were made in the 1930’s. These can be used to mass
produce toys, kitchen utensils, bottle caps, and cell phone stands to name a few.

Blow Molding
Blow molding is like injection molding except that hot liquid plastic pours out of a barrel
vertically in a molten tube. The mold closes on it and forces it outward to conform to the inside
shape of the mold. When it is cooled, the hollow part is formed. Examples of blow molding
products are bottles, tubes and containers.

Equipments needed in setting-up a blow molding business are relatively higher than injection
molding.

Compression Molding

In this type of plastic molding, a slug of hard plastic is pressed between two heated mold halves.
Compression molding usually uses vertical presses instead of the horizontal presses used for
injection and blow molding. The parts formed are then air-cooled. Prices of equipments used for
compression molding are moderate.

Film Insert Molding

This plastic molding technique imbeds an image beneath the surface of a molded part. A material
like film or fabric is inserted into a mold. Plastic is then injected.

27
Gas Assist Molding

Also called gas injection molding is used to create plastic parts with hollow interiors. Partial shot
of plastic is then followed by high-pressure gas to fill the mold cavity with plastic.

Rotational Molding
Hollow molds packed with powdered plastic are secured to pipe-like spokes that extend from a
central hub. The molds rotate on separate axes at once. The hub swings the whole mold to a
closed furnace room causing the powder to melt and stick to the insides of the tools. As the
molds turn slowly, the tools move into a cooling room. Here, sprayed water causes the plastic to
harden into a hollow part. In this type of plastic molding, tooling costs are low and piece prices
are high. Cycle time takes about 40-45 minutes.

Structural Foam Molding

Structural foam molding is a process of plastic molding usually used for parts that require thicker
walls than standard injection molding. Inserting a small amount of nitrogen or chemical blow
agent into the plastic material makes the walls thicker. Foaming happens as the melted plastic
material enters the mold cavity. A thin plastic skin forms and solidifies in the mold wall. This
type of plastic molding can be used with any thermoplastic that can be injection molded.

Thermoforming
In this plastic molding process, sheets of pre-extruded rigid plastics are horizontally heated and
sucked down into hollow one-piece tools. When the hot plastic solidifies, its shape conforms to
that of the mold.

Tooling costs are usually low and piece prices vary on the machinery.

Plastic molding is a very technical process. It needs experts in this type of manufacturing
business for it to be competitive in the market. Therefore, a very scientific and systematic study
should be first made before going into this endeavor.

INJECTION MOULDING
Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by injecting molten material
into a mould. Injection moulding can be performed with a host of materials mainly
including metals (for which the process is called die-casting), glasses, elastomers, confections,
and most commonly thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers. Material for the part is fed into a

28
heated barrel, mixed (Using a helical shaped screw), and injected (Forced) into a mould cavity,
where it cools and hardens to the configuration of the cavity.

After a product is designed, usually by an industrial designer or an engineer, moulds are made by
a mould-maker (or toolmaker) from metal, usually either steel or aluminum, and precision-
machined to form the features of the desired part. Injection molding is widely used for
manufacturing a variety of parts, from the smallest components to entire body panels of cars.
Advances in 3D printing technology, using photopolymers which do not melt during the
injection moulding of some lower temperature thermoplastics, can be used for some simple
injection moulds.

Injection Molding Process

Injection Molding Process, Basic Step 1: Product Design

Design is one of the most important facets of the production process because it’s the earliest
opportunity to prevent expensive mistakes later on. (Of course, determining whether you have a
good idea in the first place is also important, but more on that here.) There are many objectives
to design for: function, aesthetics, manufacturability, assembly, etc. The right design is one that
accomplishes the required objectives to a satisfactory level, but it may take a lot of creativity to
get there. Product design is most often accomplished with computer aided design (CAD)
software, like SolidWorks. (Click herefor nine pro tips on how to best use SolidWorks in design
and engineering.) Proficiency with CAD software is vital because it allows for quicker iterations
and more accurate prototyping if necessary.

Some specific ways to avoid costly mistakes during the product design process are to plan for
uniform wall thickness whenever possible, and to gradually transition from one thickness to
another when changes in thickness are not avoidable. It is also important to avoid building stress
into the design, such as corners that are 90 degrees or less. (Read more about Injection Molding
Defects here.)

A skilled team of design engineers will be able to brainstorm, design, and improve upon a variety
of solutions to meet the particular complexities of a specific project. The design team at Creative

Injection Molding Process, Basic Step 2: Mold Design

After a looks-like, feels-like design has been tested and slated for further production, the mold
(or die) needs to be designed for injection mold manufacturing. Molds are commonly made from
these types of metals:

29
 Hardened steel: Typically the most expensive material to use for a mold, and generally
the longest-lasting (which can drive down price per unit). This makes hardened steel a
good material choice for products where multiple hundreds of thousands are to be
produced.
 Prehardened steel: Does not last as many cycles as hardened steel, and is less expensive
to create.
 Aluminum: Most commonly used for single cavity "Prototype Tooling" when a relatively
low number of parts are needed for testing. Once the injection molded parts from this tool
are tested and approved, then a multi cavity steel production tool is produced. It is
possible to get many thousands of parts from an aluminum tool but typically it is used for
lower quantities.
 Beryllium-Copper alloy: Typically used in areas of the mold that need fast heat removal
or where shear heat is concentrated.

Just as with overall product design, mold design is another opportunity to prevent defects during
the injection molding process. We have previously written blogs on the Top 10 Injection
Molding Defects and Avoiding Mistakes in Injection Molding, but here are some examples of
how poor mold design can be a costly mistake:

 Not designing the proper draft: This refers to the angle at which the finished product is
ejected from the mold. An insufficient draft can lead to ejection problems, costing
significant time and money.
 Improperly placed or sized gates: Gates are the openings in a mold through
which thermoset or thermoplastic material is injected. Each will leave a vestige (scar),
which can create aesthetic or functional problems if not properly placed.

The number of parts (cycles) required, as well as the material they will be made of will help
drive decision-making as to how and with what materials to create the mold.

Injection Molding Process, Basic Step 3: The Manufacturing Process

When a product has been properly designed, approved, and die cast, it’s time to start the actual
manufacturing! Here are the basics of the injection molding process…

Thermoset or thermoplastic material in granular form is fed through a hopper into a heating
barrel. (Learn more about the differences between plastics in our PLASTICS course.) The plastic
is heated to a predetermined temperature and driven by a large screw through the gate(s) and into
the mold. Once the mold is filled, the screw will remain in place to apply appropriate pressure
for the duration of a predetermined cooling time. Upon reaching this point, the screw is
withdrawn, the mold opened, and the part ejected. Gates will either shear off automatically or be
manually removed. This cycle will repeat over and over, and can be used to create hundreds of
thousands of parts in a relatively short amount of time.

1V. CONCLUSION
In a NUTECH CNC PVT LTD, this internship has been an excellent and rewarding experience.
The intern has been able to meet and network with so many people during this internship period.

Accounting is also termed as accountancy; it deals with processing of financial information,

measuring and recording of certain financial transaction, it also includes analyzing of certain
economic entities. It is the most important function of any business. Accounting can also further
divided into other branches like management accounting as well as cost accounting. It is
responsible for all the kinds of monetary transactions that help in taking most of the major
management decisions. For any successful business the accounting team should be highly
efficient. The number of members in the accounting team depends entirely on the size of the
business.

The internship activities are correlated with my studies. The intern had already learned
theoretically in the college. Therefore, the knowledge which was gained from the class helped a
lot to do this internship.
