A hard magnetic disk has two surfaces.

The storage area on each surface has an inner

radius of 1 cm and an outer radius of 5 cm. Each track holds the same number of bits,
even though each track differs in size from every other. The maximum storage density
of the media is 10,000 bits/cm. The spacing between corresponding points on adjacent
tracks is .1 mm, which includes the inter-track gap. Assume that the inter-sector gaps
are negligible, and that a track exists on each edge of the storage area.

Given-
 Number of surfaces = 2
 Outer diameter = 10 cm
 Inner diameter = 2 cm
 Maximum recording density = 10,000 bits/cm
 Inter track gap = 0.1 mm

Number Of Tracks On Each Surface-

Number of tracks on each surface
= (Outer radius – Inner radius) / Inter track gap
= (5 – 1 cm) / 0.1 mm
= 4 cm / 0.1 mm
= 40 mm / 0.1 mm
= 400 tracks

Capacity Of Each Track-

Capacity of each track
= Maximum recording density x Circumference of innermost track
= 10,000 bits/cm x (3.14 x 2 cm)
= 62800 bits
= 7850 bytes

Capacity Of Disk Pack-

Capacity of disk pack
= Total number of surfaces x Number of tracks per surface x Capacity of one track
= 2 x 400 x 7850 bytes
= 6280000 bytes
= 6.28 MB
