A study on
the prevalence and identification of gastrointestinal nematodes affecting water
buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) during wet season at PCRDC-CLSU Ranch. Abstracts of
Completed Researches, 1987-1992. PCRDC at CLSU, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.

Two hundred twenty-seven (227) water buffaloes from the ranch were examined for
gastrointestinal nematode infection. Three collections of fecal samples for each animal
were obtained. Centrifugal floatation method and larval culture were employed in this
study to identify the gastrointestinal nematodes.

The common gastrointestinal nematodes identified were Neoascaris vitulorum,

strongyloides spp. Strongylus spp., Trichuris spp., Cooperia spp., Haemonchus spp.,
and Trichostrongylus spp. It was during the month of October when the highest peak
of incidence of gastrointestinal nematode infection was observed.

The study revealed that Neoascaris vitulorum and Strongyloides spp infection is
inversely related with age while Strongylus spp. Infection has a direct correlation with
age and has the highest prevalence rate in all age groups, sexes and breeds of the
water buffaloes.
