Re : Second Semester Examinations & Grading

As per the University Supplemental Advisory dated 13 April 2020, particularly Annex A thereof, the
last set of midterm examinations, the final examinations, and the mock bar examinations were supposed to
be conducted in June onsite based on the premise then that the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ)
would already be lifted by 30 April 2020 and students would be allowed to return to Baguio City. However,
with the further extension of the ECQ, the statement of the City Mayor that he will not be allowing schools
to open this June, the government issuances like the recommendation of the government Inter-Agency Task
Force (IATF) to open schools (except for online) only in August or September, and the uncertainty of when
the borders of Baguio will be open to allow students to return, it appears that it will not be plausible to
conduct the scheduled examinations onsite. As such, the School is constrained to adjust the manner of
conducting the examinations.

Upon the recommendation of the SOL Admissions and Examinations Board (AEB), duly approved by
the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and with the health and welfare of the students and faculty in mind,
while ensuring academic integrity, the examinations shall be conducted in this wise:

(a) The questionnaires for the examinations will be sent through the SLU iPortal and any other
available platform like e-mail, Google Class, Messenger. After downloading the questionnaire, the
students will answer offline.
(b) The final examinations will be composed of the following: eighty percent (80%) multiple-choice
questions and twenty percent (20%) essay questions, while the mock bar examinations will be
fifty percent (50%) multiple-choice questions and fifty percent (50%) essay questions. Aside from
testing knowledge of law, capacity to analyze and to apply legal concepts, the inclusion of
multiple-choice questions is intended to facilitate the submission of answers of students as this
can be done even through SMS or text message to the faculty. The aim is to minimize as much as
possible the need for internet connectivity in order to make it more convenient and practicable.
The multiple-choice questions shall be problem-type/analytical, and not objective-type. Each
question shall be one (1) point each, except for courses/subjects that are team-taught where part
1 (for one faculty) will have forty (40) multiple choice questions at two (2) points each and the
same for part 2 (for the other faculty). For the essay questions, majority or all shall be problem-
type/analytical; should there be objective-type then it should be limited to only one (1) question.
The faculty in coordination with their respective Department Heads shall craft measures to
minimize the possibility of cheating, e.g. preparing several sets of examinations such as having
different sequences for the multiple-choice questions. For the last set of midterm examinations,
the type of examination shall be subject to the discretion of the faculty and Department Head
concerned.
(c) The students can submit their answers to the examinations either by e-mail, Google Class,
Messenger or even through SMS or text message.
(d) The date and time of examination shall be as previously scheduled. To account for technical
difficulties, the questionnaires will already be sent fifteen (15) minutes before the scheduled start
of examinations, to wit: 5:15 p.m. for the final examinations and 4:45 p.m. for the mock bar
examinations. In case a student fails to receive a copy of the questionnaire, he/she shall
immediately inform the faculty of the same. Should the faculty be unavailable, the Department
Head concerned shall assist the student. The students shall complete the examination and submit
their answers on or before 8:00 p.m. for the final examinations and 9:00 p.m. for the mock bar
examinations. They shall ensure that they have proof of submission, e.g. screenshot. The faculty
shall acknowledge receipt of the answers. In case the student fails to receive an acknowledgment
from the faculty, he/she shall immediately coordinate with the faculty, and in case of
unavailability of the latter, then with the Department Head concerned. A buffer of fifteen (15)
minutes from the scheduled end of examinations will be given for the sending and receipt of
answers, to wit: until 8:15 p.m. for the final examinations and until 9:15 p.m. for the mock bar
examinations. Answers received beyond the buffer time but with proof that the delay was due
to technical matters or circumstances beyond the students’ control shall not be given any
deductions. Answers purposely submitted late will still be accepted but with the corresponding
deductions.

In accordance with the University Supplemental Advisory, those who will not be able to take the
scheduled examinations shall be given a No Credit (NC) grade. They can take the examinations within the
completion period provided in the University Supplemental Advisory. In line with this, the faculty shall
submit on or before 26 May 2020 a set of questions for the regular examinations this June and another set
of questions for the examinations during the completion period. For the latter, the type of examinations
shall be in accordance with the AEB Academic Quality Assurance Measures and Standards.

For those who will take the examinations and subsequently obtain a failing final grade, they will not
be given a failing grade outright. An NC grade will likewise be indicated, and the student will be allowed to
retake the examinations once – finals and/or mock bar depending on the course and the exam scores –
during the afore-mentioned completion period before a final numerical grade is entered. Remedial measures
will be undertaken to help the student improve his/her performance before retaking the examinations.

For your information, guidance, and compliance.
