GLASS IONOMER RESTORATIVES

Cavity Conditioner (GC America®) – a 20% polyacrylic acid

removes smear layer and debris for improved bonding prior to
using glass ionomer restoratives, bases, liners or core build up
materials. It should not be used with GC Fuji I luting cement.
Comes in 5.7 ml bottle.

GC Fuji IX GP (GC America®) – a chemical set, traditional

glass ionomer based restorative material indicated for: root
caries restorations, the gingival increment in an apically
extensive class II composite box, as a caries control temporary,
as a base under an amalgam or composite, and as a block-out
under indirect restorations. A unique property of this material is
its ability to be condensed after it reaches a matte appearance.
Supplied in capsules which require activation and mechanical
mixing. It requires a GC gun for dispensing.
Mixing time: 10 seconds.
Working time: 2 minutes.

Fuji II LC (GC America®) - a dual cure, resin modified glass

ionomer based restorative material indicated for: root caries
restorations, the gingival increment in an apically extensive class
II composite box, as a caries control temporary, as a base under
an amalgam or composite, and as a block-out under indirect
restorations. Supplied in capsules which require activation and
mechanical mixing. It requires a GC gun for dispensing.
Mixing time: 10 seconds.
Working time: 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

9

LINERS/BASES

Dycal (Caulk®) – indicated for pulp exposures, when either a

pulpectomy or final restoration is planned. Supplied in a two-tube
paste system. Recommend “tacking it down” with cover layer of
Fuji Lining LC, prior to placing a base or restorative material.

Fuji Lining LC (GC America®) – indicated for lining cavities.

The material is a resin modified glass ionomer, and requires light
curing for complete set. The material is supplied in a paste-paste
cartridge, which is dispensed from a special gun for mixing on a
pad. Each cartridge supplies 50 doses; it should be applied in a
thin layer, not to exceed 1.0 mm, replacing dentin only, and then
cured for 30 seconds.

Theracal LC (Bisco®) – is a light-cured, resin-modified calcium

silicate filled liner designed for use in direct and indirect pulp
capping and as a protective liner under composites, amalgams,
cements, and other base materials. It can be used as an
alternative to calcium hydroxide, glass ionomer, RMGI, IRM/ZOE
and other restorative materials. TheraCal LC performs as a barrier
and protectant of the dental pulpal complex.

10

CEMENTS

Fuji Plus (GC America®) – a resin modified glass ionomer

cement which is the cement of choice for single unit mechanically
retainer indirect restorations. The capsule must first be activated
by 1) tapping against the tabletop to loosen the contents, then by
pushing the plunger in completely. It is mixed in the special GC
mixer for 10 seconds and delivered with a GC dispensing gun into
the restoration. The working time is 1 minute and the final set is
achieved after 4 minutes. The cement should be watched
carefully and tested frequently with an explorer to monitor the
cement consistently. It is IMPORTANT TO REMOVE THE
CEMENT PRIOR TO THE FINAL SET, WHEN THE CEMENT IS
STILL RUBBERY. If the cement is allowed to set fully, it will be
extremely difficult to remove.

Fuji I (GC America®) – a traditional glass ionomer cement which

is indicated for fixed partial denture and post cementations. This
cement provides increased working time compared to the RMGI
cements. The cement is mixed in the special GC mixer for 10
seconds, and dispensed with a GC dispensing gun (also used for
Fuji Plus, Fuji IX, and Fuji II LC). Working time is 2 minutes, with
the final set occurring after 5 minutes. The cement should be
allowed to set completely prior to removal.

Fleck’s Cement (Mizzy®) – a traditional powder-liquid zinc

phosphate cement. Occasionally, a conservative cast gold
restoration may be cemented with this product. The mixing
procedure is accomplished on a large glass slab at room
temperature. One level tip of the cap of the powder is dispensed
onto the right side of the slab and divided as follows: quartered,
then one of the quarters is halved, then one of the eighths is
halved leaving two sixteenths, one eighth, and three quarters. In
the center of the slab, eight drops of liquid are dispensed. The mix
is accomplished by starting with incorporating one of the
sixteenths in the liquid and mixed for 15 seconds, followed by the
other sixteenth for an additional 15 seconds, then the eighth for an
additional 15 seconds, followed by one quarter for 20 seconds,
another quarter for 20 seconds, and then the final quarter for 35
seconds. Care should be taken to use as much of the slab as
possible to avoid too much heat generation and hence delayed
working time. When the entire amount of the powder has been
incorporated into the liquid the cement is ready for application to
both the casting and the tooth. Properly mixed cement can by
drawn off the slab 1 inch with a spatula prior to breaking.

Dental Materials Guide – 2015 – UCLA School of Dentistry, by R. Stevenson DDS

11

Durelon (3M ESPE®) – a polycarboxylate cement, which is

supplied as a powder-liquid. It was used in the past for
permanent indirect restoration cementations, but this use was
found to lead to cement dissolution over time and was thus
abandoned as a recommended technique. Today, Durelon is
indicated for long-term provisional crown cementations, Durelon
is difficult to remove from the tooth and anesthesia is usually
indicated when scraping the cement off of the vital prepared
tooth. Alternatively, an ultrasonic scaler may be used to remove
this brittle cement.

IRM (Caulk®) – a zinc-oxide eugenol based cement and

temporary restorative material for use with temporary/provisional
cementation. The cement is supplied in a powder-liquid form and
must be mixed on a paper or glass slab in a quick fashion, unlike
the zinc phosphate mixing technique.

TempBond (Kerr®) - a zinc-oxide eugenol based cement which

is supplied in unidose packages of base and catalyst. TempBond
is the preferred cementation material for cemented implant
restorations. If TempBond is mixed with an equal portion of
Vaseline, it may be used as temporary cement with permanent
restorations, when retrievability is desired shortly after initial
cementation.

TempBond Clear with Triclosan (Kerr®) – is the most

translucent provisional cement, ensuring superior esthetics with
translucent temporary materials. Available in an automix syringe,
it offers a dual cure for added security and flexibility, ease of
handling, excellent mechanical retention, and easy removal from
preparations.

Duo-Link Universal (Bisco®) – is composite cement specially

formulated for cementation of ALL indirect restorations. It is
available in two esthetic shades, Universal and Milky White.
Caution: It contains a tertiary amine and will lead to a greying
effect over time. Do not use for translucent anterior restorations or
veneers.

Dental Materials Guide – 2015 – UCLA School of Dentistry, by R. Stevenson DDS

12

Choice 2 (Bisco®) - is a high compressive strength, light cured

composite resin cement designed specifically for cementation of
porcelain and lithium disilicate. A range of VITA® shades as well as
chromatic shades are available. It is incumbent on the operator and
instructor to become familiar with the steps involved in this
cementation process by referring to the manufacturer’s instructions
prior to the delivery appointment.
Shades: A1, A2, A3, B1, B3, C2, D2, Milky bright, Milky opaque,
Universal opaque, and Translucent.
Box includes: syringe of UNI-ETCH (5g), syringe of 9.5% porcelain
etchant (5g), bottle Bis-Silane Part A and Part B (6ml), bottle ALL-
Bond 3 Part A and Part B, and bottle porcelain bonding (6ml).
[Requires instructor approval]

Bite Sticks (Temrex®) – hard pinewood single use sticks for

seating onlays, partial veneers and full coverage restorations.
Patients are instructed to clench on the stick immediately after
placing a cement filled indirect restoration on the prepared tooth.
The sticks may be tethered together with floss to create a double
stick when using rubber dam during cementation.

POSTS

ParaPost XP (Coltene-Whaledent®) - prefabricated posts for both

anterior and posterior post build-ups. The key factor in deciding
whether a prefabricated post may serve as a retentive element as
opposed to a cast post is the canal shape. Oval shaped canals are
poor recipients of pre-fab posts, because little surface area of the
post actually engages the canal wall. However, in situations where
a relative symmetrical round canal is available, the pre-fab post
may be used predictably. Each student has a special POST and
PIN Bur Kit, which contains Peeso reamers, and parallel-sided
ParaPost Drills for canal preparation. ParaPosts are cemented with
Fuji I glass ionomer cement. [Requires instructor approval]

ParaPost Drills (Coltene-Whaledent®) – Two fluted slow speed

latch-type drills. They are used to parallel the walls of post space.
The drill must be kept in continuous clockwise rotation until it has
been completely removed from the tooth. This will minimize the
possibility of the drill seizing in the post space. [Requires instructor
approval]
Note: Never use this drill to remove gutta percha as perforations
are likely due to the end-cutting tip.

D.T. Light-Post (Bisco®) - a double-taper design that provides

adaptation to a prepared canal. Fiber optic construction allows light
to be transmitted through the post so it can be cemented with light-
cured or dual-cured materials. Requires bonding and used with
Core Flo build up material. It is available in 4 diameters in the
double-taper design. [Requires instructor approval]

Para post drill chart:

# Inches mm Color
3 0.036 0.90 Brown
4 0.040 1.00 Yellow

DuraLay (Reliance®) – a pattern resin, sets in approximately 5

minutes. Forms a dense, accurate, non-shrinking pattern that can
be trimmed, handled, and invested without fear of breakage,
chipping, distortion or temperature changes. Burns out the same
temperature as wax, leaving no residue. Used to make custom
dowel cure patterns. It is available in a red 2oz. powder and a 2oz.
liquid bottles and a lubricant.

FINISHING AND POLISHING/ABRASIVE AGENTS

Dialite (Brasseler®) – complete porcelain polishing system which

is available in three forms:
1. Straight handpiece wheels (blue, red, and white), for extraoral
adjustments on large convex surfaces (proximal, cusps).
2. Straight handpiece points (blue, red, and white), for extraoral
adjustments in occlusal groove areas.
3. Latch-type cups and points for intraoral adjustments.
The Blue abrasive is used first; however, it is aggressive and
should be used with caution. The subsequent abrasives (red, then
white) are less aggressive and are primarily used to remove the
scratches left by the blue abrasive. The use of this system will
create a highly glossy ceramic surface.

Dialite LD (Brasseler®) – A new system for adjusting and

polishing Lithium Disilicate. This two-step system allows you to
quickly achieve maximum surface smoothness, enhancing your
restorations longevity and minimizing wear dentition. It is available
in intra-oral and extra-oral kits.

Abrasive paper disks (E.C. Moore®) - are available in three grits

and three diameters (1/2”, ¾”, and ⅞”): and two different snap
sizes: mini and regular: Garnet Medium, Sand Fine, and Cuttle
Fine. To finish and polish gold, after the casting has been luted
into place, the Garnet disc is rotated in the direction of gold to
tooth in order to create a flush margin. The garnet disc is the
“work horse” of the finishing procedure and accomplishes the
majority of the objective to have the tooth and gold on the same
plane. The next two discs (the sand, followed by the cuttle) are
used in the same manner, however, are limited to the removal of
scratches made by the garnet disc. The larger the disc (¾”, and
⅞”) may be used in the straight or latch type hand piece to smooth
posterior interproxipal surfaces.

Abrasive Paper Disk Mandrels (E.C. Moore®) are available in

three forms: Straight, Latch and Friction Grip. They are avaiable in
mini and regular sizes.

Master system is based on a color classification principle where the
values of lightness, chroma and hue have been positioned an equal
distance from each other. Therefore, the shade determination can
be easily carried out according to systematic criteria. When taking a
shade, the dentist has three simple steps to follow: First, determine
the value (lightness) by selecting the closest match from one of five
value groups. Second, determine the Chroma within the value
group from three choices. Third, pick the hue by determining if the
tooth has a more yellow or red cast.
