Types of Sentences Based on Function

On the basis of the meaning that they convey (function), sentences can be divided into five
main types.
Declarative Sentence

Imperative Sentence

Interrogative Sentence

Exclamatory sentence

Optative sentence
1. Assertive or declerative sentence

When a sentence tells a plain statement or expresses an opinion, it is termed as a declarative


sentence.

They tell us something. They give us information.

Declarative sentences are the most common type of sentence.

Some examples are listed below:

 The cat caught the mouse.


 The children play on the ground.
 The clouds are black today.
 I like coffee.
 I do not like coffee.
 We watched TV last night.
 We did not watch TV last night.
 We hope to see you tomorrow.
 She is studying English.

2. Interrogative Sentence (question)


Interrogative sentences ask a question.

They ask us something.

They want information, and they always end with a question mark.

 Do you like my house?


 Are you English?
 Can you help me?
 Have you done your homework?
 Why are you late to school today?
 Do you know where the teacher is?
 Why is the car not washed properly?

3. Imperative Sentence

These are sentences which express some request or order or advice.

 Do your homework.
 Close the door.
 Wait for me.
 Call me tomorrow.
 Polish my shoes.
 Please give me your pen.
 Do not waste your time.

4. Exclamatory sentences

Express some strongl feelings of mind as joy, sorrow, surprise, or wonder. An exclamatory
sentence, or exclamation, is a more forceful version of a declarative sentence. In other words,
an exclamatory sentence makes a statement (just like a declarative sentence), but it also
conveys excitement or emotion.

The mark of exclamation is always used at end of these sentences or words.

 Hurrah! We have won the match. (joy)


 Alas! He is dead. (sorrow)
 What a beautiful bird! (wonder)
 You were meant to be back yesterday!(expresses anger)
 Jeepers! You scared the life out of me!(expresses surprise)
 We won!(expresses happiness)
 This puzzle is driving me up the wall!(expresses frustration)
 You're adorable!(expresses love)
 It's a boy!(expresses joy)
 I'm really going to miss this place!(expresses sorrow)
 No, you did not have permission to stay out this late! (anger)
 I can’t figure this out! (frustration)
 Our team won the championship! (happiness)
 I don’t know what happened here! (confusion)
 I simply adore you! (love)
 My life will never be the same without you! (sorrow)
 Oh! I didn’t see you come in. (surprise)

Exclamatory words

Exclamatory words are words that generate a strong emotional response. Here is a list of
common ones but you can certainly add your own ideas so you’ll have a quick and ready list of
exclamatory words to use in your writing.

 Wow!
 Brilliant!
 Awesome!
 Ouch!
 Amazing!
 Bravo!
 Fantastic!
 Tremendous!
 Jeepers!(‫)کلمہ حیرت‬
 Unbelievable!(‫)ناقابل یقین‬

5.Optative sentences

An optative sentence is one that expresses a hope or a wish or a prayer. This kind of sentence
generally starts with ‘may’ and ‘wish’.

It ends with exclamation mark (!).

Examples

 May the king of Westeros live long!


 May you two live long enough to see your grandchildren!
 May God bless us all!
 May you become successful enough to buy love!
 May the almighty help in this tragedy!
 Wish you a very successful married life!
 Wish you a happy journey together!
