ANXIETY DEFINED
“An uneasy feeling of uncertainty, agitation,
dread, or fear. In the Bible anxiety is frequently
depicted as the common human reaction to
stressful circumstances. Anxiety is portrayed in
the Scripture as being inconsistent with trust in
God.” Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about
your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the
birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his
span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they
neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if
God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not
much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, “What shall we eat?” or
“What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your
heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.
KEY PRINCIPLE:
Whenever you notice fearful patterns in your life,
you know that you are gripping something with a
closed hand before God.

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the
stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to
eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. 3
Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war
arise against me, yet I will be confident. 4 One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of
my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. 5 For
he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the
cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.

the Lord (v. 4-5)
5. Spend time giving your specific anxieties to God. Make sure to aim
for the root of your anxiety, not just what is obvious on the surface.
6. Reflect on Psalm 27, asking God to help you replace fear of people/
circumstances with the fear of the Lord and hope in people/
circumstances with hope in the Lord.
8. Ask God for grace, peace, faith and trust in Himself more
than others or your circumstances.
