My Biggest Takeaway from A Raisin in the Sun
The biggest takeaway I had from reading Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun is
how much a mother is willing to give up everything and do everything and anything for their
child or children.
Both of my parents are hardworking people and I aspire to be like them. I am fortunate
enough to have a roof over my head, attend a private school, have a car, and have things that not
everyone is fortunate for. However, this is all because of my parents and their hard work and
sacrifices they have given up for me. I am absolutely so grateful for all of the things I have and
aspire to provide the same for my children in the future. I have come to realization and observed
all of the things my parents do for me and what they give up in return. My mom for one is a very
hard worker and spends even her days off working to provide for us. She also gives up her social
life to make sure we are taken care of and spends all of her time off with us. My mom gives up
her own weekends to make sure I get to and from my soccer games and is always supporting me.
When my dad owned his restaurant he spent constant hours at work and in between would have
lunch and spend time with all of us. I notice that my parents are quick to drop everything they
have to ensure that my siblings and I are okay.
When I look at my own life and compare it to the Younger family, I see how much my
mom and dad have given up for my siblings and I just as Lena Younger and her husband had.
When Lena cries and explains how hard her husband worked for her family I was truly able to
see what parents are willing to do for their children. I could see how upset Lena was but was still
willing to push forward and make sure she still had a job to provide for her family. Life brings
ups and downs and as long as you have your family you can overcome those obstacles.
The play also made me realize how fortunate I have to be about everything I have. I am
extremely grateful for all I have but I do not always take the time to really appreciate it all.
Walter, Ruth, and Lena all work in the home inorder to bring just enough to the table. Their
family struggles with money and in the end lose all of their money which limits their ability to do
certain things and follow their dreams. As for me, I live in a stable home where my parents push
me to do things for myself and I have the resources available to ensure that I can follow my
dreams.. I often find myself seeing other situations which make me realize how blessed I am and
how sometimes I do take things for granted. The littlest things in life are so great to others and
even make me sad because if I do have it I do not think very much of it. In conclusion, I have
taken a lot away from the play and have realized how fortunate I have to be for my parents and
their hard work, as well as the things that I have available in my life.
