As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:


 Define the role of the different branches of government
 Identify the three levels of government (division of powers)

Time Motivation and Introduction:

Students to complete their mind-maps from last week on the separation of power and
role of the different branches of government (legislative, executive, judiciary)

If students have all completed – then classroom discussion about what each student
has on their mind-map
Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):
 Introduction on the concept of the Division of Power PowerPoint (20 mins)
PowerPoint – outlining the different levels of government (federal, state local) and the
main responsibilities of each level of government
Introduce new vocabulary to students with the use of visual aids to enhance student
PowerPoint
learning. Use visual aids such as a diagram to show “division of power” and make
emphasis the difference between the separation and division of power.
40 minutes During the PowerPoint students are expected to focus on the PowerPoint rather than
take notes. From experience on prac, Year 7s still often find it difficult to take notes and
worry more about copying notes then focusing on what the teacher has to say – at the
end of the PowerPoint students will be provided with a worksheet that summarises the

Instructions will provided to students orally and visually (written on the whiteboard)
First worksheet:
Fill in the missing word worksheet – students will be provided with the word bank to
select from, to fill in the missing word/s (this worksheet summarises the PowerPoint)
Word-Search
Students struggling with the worksheet can use the Oxford Big Ideas 7 to assist them
as well referring back the glossary sheet provided them.
Second task:
Students to complete question 1,2,3 and 4 from Oxford Big Ideas p. 427.

Whilst students are completing worksheets, circulate around the classroom to assist
students and gage their understanding of the topic
10 minutes Word- search is also available for students who finish both worksheets earlier

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

 Review the first worksheet with the class to ensure students have the correct
answers (going around the classroom, each student reads out one sentence)
