SHOPPING – THEN AND NOW

Can you imagine paying for your shopping with a cow? Thousands of years ago, people exchanged animals for
products. So how has shopping changed since then?
 3000 BC Money was first introduced in
Mesopotamia (Iraq). The money was called the
shekel and it was a unit of weight. People began
to use this instead of animals to buy things.
 800 BC Markets were popular places for
shopping. In Ancient Greece, the marketplace,
called agora, was found in the city centre.
Markets were organised by the type of products
sold. For example, fish-sellers were in one place
and people selling clothes in another.
 1252 The florin was a gold coin made in
Florence. The florin became the dominant coin
in Europe, so people could use it to buy and sell
products in different countries.
 1290 Marco Polo brought paper money to Europe
after his visit to China. He was amazed by this
method of doing business. “With these pieces of
paper they can buy anything and pay for
anything,” he said.
 1776 The world’s first department store, Harding,
Howell & Co., opened in London. The shop had
four departments and sold things like fashion
accessories, hats and jewellery.
 1909 The department store Selfridges opened in
London. When the owner, Harry Selfridge, spoke
to his employees, he often said, “The customer is
always right.” Selfridges made shopping a fun
activity. With 100 departments, elegant
restaurants, a roof garden and a reading room
for people to relax, visiting a department store
became an exciting full-day activity.
 1946 John Biggins introduced the first credit card,
called the Charg-It card. From that moment,
customers didn’t have to carry money with them,
just a little plastic card.
 1994 Online shopping began. Pizza Hut took one
of the first online orders for a pizza, with
mushrooms, pepperoni and extra cheese.
 Today Although going to shops is still popular,
online shopping has become bigger than ever
before. Various digital payment methods also
now exist to make life easier for online shoppers
everywhere. According to Amazon owner Jeff
Bezos, “Online commerce saves customers
money and precious time.”
