MEAN DEVIATION OR AVERAGE DEVIATION

Introduction
The formula for calculating mean deviation is
∑ 𝒇|𝑫|
𝑴. 𝑫 =
𝑵
Where M.D = Mean Deviation
f is frequency of corresponding interval,
N is total no of frequency ∑ 𝒇
|𝐷 | read as Mod D = (X – A) is the modulus value or absolute value i.e., deviations
from median or mode ignoring ± signs.

Coefficient of Mean Deviation

̅,
If deviations are taken from arithmetic mean, 𝑿
𝑀.𝐷
Coefficient of M.D = ̅ is mean,
; where 𝑿
𝑋̅

If deviations are taken from median, (M)

𝑀.𝐷
Coefficient of M.D = where, M is Median
𝑀

If deviations are taken from mode (Z),

𝑀.𝐷
Coefficient of M.D = where Z is Mode.
𝑍

When Mean or Median or Mode is in fractions, in that case, direct formula is

applicable.

A. Individual Series
∑ 𝑋1− ∑ 𝑋2− [𝑁1− 𝑁2 ] [ 𝑋̅ 𝑜𝑟 𝑍,𝑀 ]
𝑀. 𝐷 =
𝑁

∑ 𝑋1 is the sum of terms greater than 𝑋̅ , Z or M

∑ 𝑋2 is the sum of terms less than 𝑋̅ , Z or M
𝑁1 is the sum of total No. of terms greater than 𝑋̅ , Z or M
𝑁2 is the sum of total No. of terms less than 𝑋̅ , Z or M
N = 𝑁1 + 𝑁2 = total No. of terms = ∑ 𝒇

1. Compute M.D and Coefficient of M.D from mean and median for the following
data.
3 7 12 14 15 18 22

Solution:
∑𝑋
1) 𝑋̅ = ; ∑ 𝑋 = 3 + 7 + 12 + 14 + 15 + 18 + 22 = 91
𝑁

91
𝑋̅ = = 13
7
X 𝑑𝑥 = |𝑋 − 𝑋̅ | (± signs ignored)
3 10
7 6
12 1
14 1
15 2
18 5
22 9
∑ 𝑑𝑥 = 34

Uday N

N=7
Now, ∑ 𝑑𝑥 = 34
∑ 𝑑𝑦 37
And M.D = = 4.86
𝑁 7

M.D for Mean = 4.86

And Coefficient of Mean Deviation from Mean
𝑀. 𝐷 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 4.86
= = = 0.374
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 13
2)
N=7, Median is 4 th term = 14
X 𝑑𝑦 = |𝑋 − 𝑀 | (± signs ignored)
3 11
7 7
12 2
14 0
15 1
18 4
22 8
∑ 𝑑𝑦 = 33

Now ∑ 𝑑𝑦 = 33, 𝑁 = 7
∑ 𝑑𝑥 33
And 𝑀. 𝐷 = = = 4.71
𝑁 14

And Coefficient of Mean Deviation from Mean

𝑀. 𝐷 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 4.71
= = = 0.336
𝑀𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 14
By Direct Method
∑ 𝑋1− ∑ 𝑋2− [𝑁1− 𝑁2 ] [ 𝑋̅ 𝑜𝑟 𝑍,𝑀 ]
𝑀. 𝐷 = 𝑁
As it is a Individual series hence frequency is one in each case

From Mean:
𝑋̅ = 13
∑ 𝑋1 = 14 + 15 + 18 + 22 = 69 ;

∑ 𝑋2 = 12 + 7 + 3 = 22

𝑁1=4(𝑁𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑋̅

𝑁2 =3(𝑁𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑋̅
𝟔𝟗−𝟐𝟐−(𝟒−𝟑)(𝟏𝟑) 𝟑𝟒
From (1); 𝑴. 𝑫 = = = 𝟒. 𝟖𝟔
𝟕 𝟕

From Median

𝑀 = 14; ∑ 𝑋1 = 15 + 18 + 22 = 55 𝑁1 = 3

∑ 𝑋2 = 12 + 7 + 33 = 22; 𝑁2 = 3 (𝑁𝑜. 𝑓 𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑀)

𝟓𝟓−𝟐𝟐−(𝟑−𝟑) (𝟏𝟒) 𝟑𝟑
Again from (1) ; 𝑴. 𝑫 = = = 𝟒. 𝟕𝟏
