Dear Sir or Madam:

In my Research Paper, I hope to answer the question: How does music and the arts affect people socially and
emotionally? I am interested in music and want to pursue it as a career. I am also interested in why we as people
feel emotions when we listen to music. The majority of people feel positive emotions when they play or listen to
music. I have read a few articles on this subject and have found that senior citizens benefits a lot from the positive
effects of music and performing arts

The Experiential Project I have chosen is to play music with a few of my fellow musicians at senior centers
around Concord and Walnut Creek. My hope is for the music I play to affect the senior citizens in a positive way.
I feel like music is the best way to entertain the elderly because it is fun for them and it is not physically intense. I
want to go to at least 4 or 5 different senior care facilities. Since most facilities are small and the residents don't
have many chances to go outside the facility watching a live performance would be the perfect thing to give to
these people. I will contact Mo Levich, the director of the Rossmoor Big Band in Walnut Creek, to be my mentor.

This project involves creating a small combo and finding members for the band, researching different care
facilities, and contacting the facilities to find a good time to perform.

This will be challenging for me because I have never had to create a band, normally I am invited to play at a gig
or performance but I have never put together a group myself. At the end of my project, my Digital Portfolio will
detail the entire experience: the research conducted, the project experience, and my volunteer commitment. I think
the entire project will be around 40-50 hours of work maybe 30 if things go smoothly there won't be any costs
involved as the instruments will be owned by the people playing them and if that is not the case then the
instruments will be provided by the Northgate High School Instrumental Music Program.
