Skill of
Probing Questioning
Probing Questions:-
Probing questions are those
which help the pupils to think in
depth about the various aspects of
the problem. By asking such
questions again, the teacher
makes the pupils more
thoughtful. He enable the pupils
to understand the subject deeply.

Skill of Probing Questioning:-
“ The skill of probing questioning is
going deep into pupils responses
through step by step questioning
with a view to eliciting the criterion
response.” – Jangira M.K. and Singh,

1. Prompting:-
When a pupil expresses
his inability to answer
the question in the
class or his answer is incomplete or his
answer is totally wrong, the teacher can
ask such questions which prompt the
pupils in solving the already asked
question.

Example :
T:What are the functions of Municipality ?
P:No response.
T:Who supplies water to the city ?
P:Municipality.
2. Seeking further information:-
This technique may be used
when the student gives incomplete or
partially correct answer. The teacher tries
to help the student to clarify his response.
Additional information related to the
question or answer can be asked for in
order to judge whether the student has
properly understood the concept or not.

T:What are the other functions ?
3. Refocusing:-
This technique is used when the
student's answer is correct. The student
can be asked to relate the knowledge
gained in the similar or new situations. It
will provide the student an opportunity to
think about the application(s) of the
acquired knowledge or skills.

Example:
What are the similarity between one thing
(in point ) to another thing ?
What are the differences between one
thing (in point ) to another thing ?
Give another examples of this
phenomenon/ process/ method etc.
4. Increasing critical awareness :
This technique is used when the
student gives the correct answer. In
such a situation, the teacher puts higher
order questions in order to increase
critical thinking among students.
Critical thinking will help the students
to achieve higher level objectives.

5. Redirection:-
This technique is applied when no
answer or incorrect answer is provided
by the student after many attempts
made by the teacher. This technique
involves directing the same question to
another student.

Topic :Sources of Water Time :
Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity Components
What is water cycle ? No response
What are the sources of water ? Well, rivers, and Sea. P
Name some other sources of water. Rain and melting of snow. SFI
Where from do you get rain ? From clouds.
How the clouds are formed ? No response ICA
When you put the wet clothes
to dry, What happens to water ? It evaporates. P
Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity Components
Give more examples of Ref
water evaporation ? Evaporation takes place
on the rivers and the sea.
Where does the water go after SFI
evaporation ? The water goes up in the
sky in the forms of vapour.
Why do the water vapour go up ICA
in the sky ? Because light and hot things go
up and vapour is light and hot.
How the clouds are formed ? The clouds are formed by ICA
the water vapour.
What happens to clouds when SFI
they are cooled high up in The clouds (vapour) turn into
sky ? Water.
Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity Components
What does after the clouds turn SFI
into water ? Water fall to earth in the
form of rain.
Where does the water go after the
rainfall ? It goes into rivers and finally
into the sea.
Compare the process of rain Ref
to some instance of your daily When we heat water in the pot,
life ? it turns into vapours. If we put a
lid on the pot and stopheating,
after sometimes thedrops of
water would appearon the inside
of the lid and fallback into the pot.
So What is water cycle ?
A good teacher
makes you think
even when you
don’t want to.
