• We use but to join two contrasting(相对) ideas.

Examples:

The mechanic tried his best. He could not repair the car.
The mechanic tried his best but he could not repair the car.
and
• We use and to join two similiar(相近) ideas.

Examples:

The hawker fries noodles. The hawker cooks porridge.


The hawker fries noodles and he cooks porridge.
or
• We use or to show a choice(选择) between two things.

Examples:

I can help at the orphanage. I can visit the old folks 'home.
I can help at the orphanage or visit the old folks 'home.
although
• We use although to join two contrasting(相对) ideas.

Examples:
He told me to skip school. I attended all my classes.
i. Although he told me to skip school, I attended all my classes.
ii. I attended all my classes although he told me to skip school.
so
• We use so to show the result of an action.
Examples:
He lied so he was punished.
either… or
• We use either…or to join two sentences.

Examples:
Eric should buy his mother a cake. Eric should buy his mother some flowers.
Eric should buy his mother either a cake or some flowers.
either… or

Examples:
Tharanee has completed the jigsaw puzzle. Her brothers have completed the jigsaw puzzle.
i. Either Tharanee or her brothers have completed the jigsaw puzzle.
ii. Either her brothers or Tharanee has completed the jigsaw puzzle.
