LEVEL & FLOW SOLUTIONS

- ACOUSTIC WAVE SERIES

The SULTAN is a non intrusive acoustic wave transmitter with flexibility used for measuring liquids and solids.

• Remote, Integral & SMART units available.

Operation by 2 wire loop or seperate power supply can be selected by a simple change of SMART card position.

Principle of Operation

The SULTAN emits a high powered acoustic wave transmit pulse which is reflected from the surface of the
material being measured. The reflected signal is processed using specially developed software to enhance the
correct signal and reject false or spurious echoes.

The transmission of these high powered waves ensures minimal losses through the environment where the sen-
sor is located. Due to this high powered emitted pulse, any losses have a far less effect than traditional ultra-
sonic devices. More energy is transmitted hence more energy is returned. The receiver circuitry is designed to
indentify and monitor low level return signals even when noise levels are high.

The measured signal is temperature compensated to provide maximum accuracy to the outputs and display.

WATER AND SEWERAGE

Hawk Measurement Systems has long been involved in the water and wastewater industry. Some of the ap-
plications we are experienced in are open channel flow monitoring in aquaducts, level monitoring in reservoirs,
sludge blanket controls in both primary and secondary clarifiers as well as being one of the worlds largest sup-
plier of ultrasonics for sewerage wet well applications.

We have recently expanded our range to include point devices to monitor density and suspended solids.
Hawk, over the years has developed an excellent working relationship with the worlds largest water and waste-
water authorities. We have invested heavily in research and development to ensure we have the most state of
the art equipment available on the market today.

- SONAR SLUDGE LEVEL SYSTEM

The ORCA series Sonar will measure up to two density interfaces simultaneously, either bed level or RAS blan-
ket and floc/fluff layer or clarity of water, using the new ORCA Sonar hardware.

Principle of Operation

The ORCA series Sonar transmits a sound pulse through the liquid towards the blanket/interface at the bottom
of the tank. The pulse is reflected off the blanket/interface back to the sonar transducer, which is interpreted by
the Orca transmitter, compensated for temperature and provides a distance reading to the blanket/interface or
height of blanket/interface from the bottom up. An analog output or comms based output tracks this blanket/
interface.

The ORCA series also provides a second independent output that can be programmed to track either the clarity
of the water (liquid) monitoring the change of suspended solids, or other stratified interfaces or, the fluff/floc
layer (where the interface moves independent of the RAS blanket/bed level and needs to be monitored to pre-
vent overflow into the launders).

The ORCA processing software monitors the operating efficiency of the sonar transducer. As the efficiency
drops off, due to build-up of scum, air bubbles, scaling etc. to the transducer diaphragm, the automatic clean-
ing mechanism will remove all scum and attached solids to restore the sonar transducers optimum efficiency.

MICROWAVE - BLOCKED CHUTE

Point level switching for presence or absence of most solid and liquid materials. Environmentally and personally
safe replacement for nucleonic switches. Not restricted by OSHA or FCC regulations. Caution sign posting not
required.

Principle of Operation

The Hawk Microwave Pulse Sender-Receiver Remote System is comprised of three electrically isolated units:- the
sender unit, three receiver units and amplifier unit. The Integral System is comprised of two electrically isolated
units - the send and the receiver unit. The Sender-Receiver units are mounted facing each other.

The sender emits a burst of microwave energy toward the receiver, which is designed around a tuned microwave
detector. This burst of energy is transmitted approximately 200 times each second. When the line-of-sight is
interrupted by a sufficienct reflective or absorbent material the energy will not reach the receiver, and therefore
the receiver will not detect the transmission.

The receiver is designed to switch a relay when it’s detector changes state. Time delays between detector
change and relay switching is set via two single turn potentiometers; there is a potentiometer for the make (sig-
nal detected) delay and another for the break (signal interrupted) delay. In each case the relay will switch only
after the detector state has been maintained (since it’s change) for the respective time: any further change of
state during a time-out period will override the previous change.

The sensitivity of the detector is adjusted by a potentiometer. By this adjustment, compensation can be made
for partially reflective or partially absorbing materials. Similarly, it can be adjusted so that it will change state
when only a fraction of the beam is blocked. There are two sensitivity adjustment potentiometers, one for a
coarse adjustment and the other for a fine adjustment.

The relay can be set to either energize or de-energize when the beam is broken.

MICROWAVE DOPPLER SWITCH

Flow/no flow detection in solid material handling applications such as feeder chutes and conveyor systems.

Principle of Operation

The Hawk MDS series Microwave doppler flow switch was developed for use in process applications requiring
highly reliable non-contact product flow detection. The system operates by sending out bursts of microwave
energy toward the target product being monitored. The target product will reflect some of the microwave en-
ergy back to the MDS system where it is processed to determine if the product is flowing. The MDS system uses
the Doppler principle to determine if the product is moving by monitoring small charges in the reflected signal
frequency.

Typical Uses

• Product detection on belt conveyor systems

• Product discharge detection on stackers
• Coal feeder monitoring - Power stations
• Grain feeder monitoring
• Aggregate feeder chute monitoring
• Conveyor/transfer chute monitoring
• Machine/conveyor motion detector

SMART SWITCH SERIES

VS1000
Vibration Switch Series

The piezo-electrically stimulated oscillating probe vibrates at its mechanical frequency of resonance. If the
probe is covered by bulk material, the damping thus generated is registered electronically and a corresponding
signal output is actuated. The oscillation of the device ensures that it features certain self cleaning properties
and can be used for liquids and solids product detection. PC Connectable.

Typical Uses

The device is used for level monitoring in all types of containers and silos. It can be used with all powdery and
granulated bulk materials that do not show a propensity to form crusts or deposits and are free flowing or can
be used on low viscosity liquids. A wide range of applications are found in foodstuff manufacturing.

Primary Areas of Application

• Building Industry - Materials, lime
styrofoam, moulding sand etc.
• Foodstuff Industry - Milk powder, flour, salt etc.
• Plastics Industry - Powder, granules etc
• Timber Industry, Chemical Industry, Mining etc.

tween the sensing probe, the product and the vessel wall. It features excellent temperature stability and switch
point repeatibility. It has the capability to neglect conductive and non conductive product build up on the probe.

ROTATION RS4000 SERIES

RS4000
Rotation Switch Series

• High Reliability
• Dust Sealed

Principle of Operation

The RS4000 rotating vane is driven by a slow speed synchronous geared motor. The rotating vane projects into
a container. When the material to be monitored reaches the rotating vane, the rotating movement of the latter
is impeded. The synchronous motor is freely suspended at its driving axle. The resulting reaction torque is used
to operate a microswitch that delivers a corresponding electric output signal. The geared motor is stopped and
the switch contacts change over.

Typical Uses

For safe and multi-purpose level monitoring in all types of containers and silos. It can be used with all bulk
materials and powders.

ADVANCED REMOTE SUPPORT

Hawk has once again redefined industrial level control with its revolutionary GSM/CDMA communication device
HawkLink. This unit allows any computer with a standard modem and Goshawk software to dial in and calibrate,
test or check in on the performance of the Hawk product. Hawk understands it can be difficult or inconvenient
to have qualified service personel access a unit during the commissioning, so the solution is to dial in remotely.

Remote technical support via our GSM/CDMA module can monitor and adjust settings no matter what corner of
the world.

This system allows complete commissioning of equipment in applications to be done via GSM/CDMA
connectable sites worldwide.
