1 — Introduction
Welcome to the TG Mastering Pack.

In 1972, Abbey Road Studios received the first of its TG12410 transfer consoles. The
consoles were custom-built by EMI to meet the requirements of the studios’ disk
cutting and tape transfer facilities. Over the years, these consoles have been used to
master countless classic recordings at Abbey Road. Their sound and design is
considered so good that several are still used today in the studios’ mastering and
transfer rooms.

The TG Mastering Pack contains authentic emulations of the Tone Control and Filter
modules from the console. The Tone Control (TG12412) is a comprehensive multi-
band EQ and the Filter (TG12414) provides low- and high-pass filters and a presence
EQ. They provide engineers with powerful sound-shaping tools and bring the unique,
musical character of the TG modules to the world of digital audio workstations.

System Requirements

To use the TG Mastering Pack you need the following:

• Any AU or VST compatible host application

• Mac: Intel or PowerPC Processor, Windows: PIII or higher
• Mac OS X 10.4 (or higher), Windows XP or Vista
• iLok USB Key and iLok.com account.

3 — Using the TG Mastering Pack
Using the TG Mastering Pack in a project involves inserting the TG12412 or TG12414
on a track, then adjusting the parameters as needed.

To insert the plug-ins on a track:

1. Select an insert point on the track you wish to use the plug-in on.
2. Choose ‘TG12412’ or ‘TG12414’ from the insert menu.
3. Adjust the settings as required (see the following sections).

The plug-ins support mono, stereo, and multichannel operation and sample rates up to
192 kHz.

The plug-ins also support all standard plug-in features, including preset files, remote
control surfaces and automation.

Adjusting Controls

The plug-in controls may be adjusted in the following ways:

• Click and drag up/to the right to increase a control setting, or drag down/to the
left to decrease.
• By clicking on any of the label markings around the control knob to go instantly
to a setting.
• Using a remote control surface.

To reset a control to its default setting:

• Option-click (if on Mac OS X) or Alt-click (on Windows XP) the desired control.

6
TG12412 Tone Control

The TG12412 plug-in is a semi-parametric EQ made up of four bands in cascade.

Each band has a frequency selector, a variable gain control and a shape selector. The
plug-in also has a master level control.

Frequency

This control sets the centre frequency for each of the four
bands. The frequencies cover the range from 32 Hz to 16
kHz at half-octave intervals apart from the octave
between 2.05 to 4.1 kHz, where the settings give third-
octave intervals.

A unique feature of the TG12412 is the fact that the

frequencies are based around the frequency of middle C
(256 Hz), which is thought to be a reason for its musical
character.

7
The available frequencies on the TG12412 are:

Band 1: 32, 45, 64, 91 and 128 Hz

Band 2: 181, 256, 362, 512 and 724 Hz
Band 3: 1.02, 1.45, 2.05, 2.6 and 3.25 kHz
Band 4: 4.1, 5.8, 8.1, 11 and 16 kHz

Gain

The Gain control sets the amount of boost or cut for each
band. It provides a range of +/- 10dB in 1 dB steps, with
the default value being 0 dB.

Shape

The Shape control sets the curve shape for each band.
The five settings have been carefully modeled to match
the curve shapes on the original hardware. These are:

LOW Low End

BL Blunt
MED Medium
SH Sharp
HIGH High End

The Blunt, Medium and Sharp settings give a bell curve shape and set the width or
“Q” of the bell curve. The Low End and High End settings give low and high shelving
EQ. These different shapes make the TG12412 a highly-flexible EQ – suited to both
corrective and creative applications.

One particularly useful feature of the TG12412 is the ability to use the low- and high-
shelf settings at any frequency. For example, setting the Shape to HIGH at 512 Hz
and boosting is an easy way to improve the overall brightness of a dull recording.

8
Level

This control sets the overall output level of the TG12412

plug-in. It gives +/-10 dB of output adjustment in 1 dB
steps. The default setting is 0 dB.

TG12414 Filter

The TG12414 plug-in provides variable high- and low-pass filters, a presence section
and a master level control.

The presence section provides the same frequencies as the presence EQ on the
EMI TG12345 mixing console. It can be useful for making recordings more (or less)
prominent in a mix.

9
kHz LOW PASS

The LOW PASS control sets the cut-off frequency of the low-pass filter. It can be set
to HIGH, 20, 15, 12, 10 or 8 kHz. The default setting is the HIGH position, which sets
the cut-off at approximately 38 kHz.

Presence – kHz and dB

The upper control (kHz) selects the

centre frequency for the presence
section. The available frequencies are
0.5, 0.8, 1.2, 1.8, 2.8, 4.2, 6.5 and 10
kHz, and the curve shape is
approximately the same as the
‘Medium’ shape setting on the
TG12412 Tone Control.

The lower control (dB) sets the amount

of boost or cut for the presence
control. It offers +/-10 dB of adjustment
in 1 dB steps. The default setting is 0
dB.

Hz HIGH PASS

The HIGH PASS control sets the cut-

off frequency of the high-pass filter. It
can be set to LOW, 40, 63, 80, 110 Hz.

The default setting is the LOW

position, which sets the cut-off at
approximately 13Hz.

Note: The low- and high-pass filters have a roll-off of 18 dB per octave.

10
Level

This control sets the overall output

level of the TG12414 plug-in.

It provides +/-10 dB of adjustment in 1

dB steps. The default setting is 0 dB.

General Operation

Please refer to the documentation for your host application if you are unfamiliar with
any of the following:

• Navigating plug-in windows

• Plug-in automation
• Using preset files
• Bypassing plug-ins
