PUTRAJAYA, Sept 5 (Bernama) -- The Finance Ministry won the Prime
Minister's Innovation Award 2014 for its Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) concept which provides key government and private services under one roof. The Secretary General of Treasury, Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, said UTC's innovation concept proved it could be implemented at a reasonable cost and still performed the task quickly, showing improvements in service delivery to citizens more effectively. "Services at UTC are opened from 8 am to 10 pm, thus enabling many people, especially those who work during the day, to go to the centre and make use of its services after work. Housewives can also perform various transactions in one place," he told reporters after the prize giving ceremony here today. A cash prize of RM1 million, a trophy and a certificate of appreciation was presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to Mohd Irwan and senior deputy director of the National Strategy Unit Dr Aminuddin Hassim. He said currently eight UTCs and a Mini UTC had been opened while three other UTCs, namely in Sabah, Johor and Sarawak would be inaugurated by the prime minister soon. "The ministry is also planning to open centres in Terengganu, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan and the other states. The concept of Mini UTCs will also be developed in small towns," he said. The UTC centres are opened in old or existing buildings which are renovated within a period of about six weeks with minimal costs. "We have received positive response from the people with the number of people coming to UTC rising daily," he said. During the past year, a total of 1.6 million people were recorded visiting the six opened UTCs, while up to July this year 1.7 million visitors were recorded with the opening of two more new UTCs. -- BERNAMA NSF AYU LES TVKB CJ
