ONS Social Surveys Operations is responsible for collecting
the data for the social and economic surveys commissioned
by government departments and other public bodies. It acts
as a bridge between the Government and the people,
providing information and making it possible for policy
makers to keep in touch with the circumstances and
opinions of the general public and to plan for future public
services to meet the needs of the population.
Our work is mainly concerned with individual members of
the public rather than with business or institutions. We have
three separate field forces:
• Field Interviewers collect data via face to face
interviews with sampled respondents in their homes.
• International Passenger Survey Interviewers collect data
via face to face interviews with passengers at ports,
airports and sea tunnels.
• Telephone Interviewers collect data via telephone
interviews with sampled respondents.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS)
ONS is the executive office of the UK Statistics Authority
which is an independent body at arm’s length from
government, and which reports directly to the UK
Parliament, the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly
for Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly. ONS is the
UK’s National Statistical Institute and largest producer of
official statistics and produces statistics on a range of key
economic, social and demographic topics. Key services
include measuring changes in the value of the UK
economy (GDP), estimating the size, geographic
distribution and characteristics of the population
(including statistics from the Census) and providing
indicators of price inflation (CPI), employment, earnings,
crime and migration. ONS currently employs circa 3,700
staff, 700 of whom are Field Interviewers who collect
information for social surveys. ONS operates from two
main sites - corporate headquarters at Newport in South
Wales and from Titchfield, near Fareham in Hampshire.

What qualities will I need to become a
successful interviewer?
The key to good interviewing is excellent communication, so
you will need to have a pleasant and friendly personality, and
the confidence to approach and converse with a wide
selection of people, in order to gain respondents’ interest
and co-operation.
The ability to persuade reluctant people to agree to be
interviewed is an important aspect of the job and we will
provide training and support to help you with this.
• You will need to be able to plan, organise and manage
your own work.
• You must be capable of communicating tactfully and
sensitively with any section of the population, young or
old, employees or employers, highly educated or
illiterate, all of whom will need a slightly different
approach if they are to be successfully interviewed.
• Excellent verbal communication skills are essential.
• You will need to be proficient in utilising electronic
equipment to record survey responses. You will need
to use a laptop and smartphone.
• The full use of a car for work purposes at any time of
the day.
• You will be required to transport equipment such a

This is a major and very important part of an Interviewer’s role.
No matter how good the data is that you collect during an
interview if you are not able to complete the administrative
tasks associated with this activity then the data can be totally
compromised. This activity includes ensuring all time and
expenses incurred are accurately recorded using correct
codes, providing reports on progress to your Manager,
sending letters to respondents, completing coding on data you
have collected, completing pay claims and regularly
transmitting data back to the office via your laptop.
This looks to be a daunting list. The training and subsequent
support provided by colleagues, qualified mentors and an
experienced Interviewer Manager, will provide you with the
knowledge and skills to deal with all the areas identified.
Regular checks will be completed on all interviewers’ work
which will include contacting respondents to check results.
Will I be expected to work in all areas?
As addresses are selected randomly to ensure they are
representative of the total population, interviewers work in a
wide range of areas. Addresses cannot be substituted and
first contact must be made face-to-face.
You will be managing your own work and this allows some
flexibility but your hours will be dictated by the people you
are interviewing and the areas you work in. You will need to
work efficiently and maximise your time in the field when the
people you are seeking to interview are available. This is
normally, but not exclusively, in the evenings. You will be
responsible for planning your route and mapping out the
addresses you need to call on and you must ensure it is
done in the most sensible and cost effective way.
The first call at an address will normally be during the
daytime, so at the start of a quota you will be setting off
earlier in the day to find addresses and make contact and
appointments at as many addresses as possible. If you
can't make contact with occupants, you will need to keep
calling back on different days and at different times of the
day, particularly in the evening. As you work through your
quota a ‘typical’ day will mean going out mid-afternoon and
working through into the evening. You may be working up
to 40 miles from home, so there is often no opportunity to
go home between visits. As interviewers find that the best
time to find people at home and conduct interviews is in
the evenings, much of your work will be carried out then,
usually up to and sometimes beyond 9:30pm.
However, the availability requirements are fluid. For example,
you must be available two out of three days Monday to
Wednesday each week, but the actual working days may
vary. You will also need to be available to work Saturdays
because this is a productive day for making contact with
respondents and conducting interviews.
The nature of the job means that you will need to be fully
flexible in order to fit in with times when people are free to be
interviewed and your normal routine may be disrupted by this
requirement. If you have any regular fixed commitments at
all, even if they are for only part of a day, including other
employment, which cannot be altered to fit in with the
demands of the business, you may not be able to meet our
availability requirements.

whether any commitments that you may have are flexible or

You will be expected to call at every address included in
your quota of work for a particular survey. However, we do
not expect you to put your personal safety at risk. Therefore
if, having made contact, you have concerns about working
in a specific area, you should discuss alternative methods
with your manager.
You may have to return to a property several times to
secure an interview either because no one has answered
or where people are unsure whether to take part. You may
also find that you have to alter your timetable to suit the
respondent’s availability. You must be available to accept
work when it is allocated to you. The only time when you
can make yourself unavailable is when you are on
authorised leave.

Pay
The salary includes an unsociable hours supplement which recognises participation in a

Probationary period
You are required to complete a 12 month probationary period
which begins on the commencement date of your contract. To
successfully complete your probation period, you must complete
a sufficient amount of work to enable an assessment of your
performance and you must achieve a satisfactory standard in all
aspects of work carried out. These include the quantity and
quality of interviews undertaken, the ability to work to deadlines,
the response rates achieved, the planning of work, record
keeping and the satisfactory completion of administrative tasks.
In addition, there are standards of attendance and conduct that
must be met in order to successfully complete your probation
period. You will be supported to ensure you successfully
complete your probation period; however, ONS reserves the
right to terminate an interviewer's appointment at any time
during the probationary period if the interviewer's performance/
attendance/conduct is assessed as unsatisfactory, with little
potential for improvement.

There are specific operational requirements for this role,
and we particularly welcome applicants living in the local
postcode area.
You will work from your home address and you will usually
work within a reasonable daily travelling distance of your
home.
Most of your time will be spent interviewing members of
the public in their own homes. All selected addresses
receive a letter in advance from ONS so you will not be
cold calling. You will:
• organise your own work.
• visit randomly selected areas and addresses.
• encourage people to take part and make appointments,
• ask survey questions and record the answers on a
laptop computer.
• as a guest in a respondents home act as an
ambassador for ONS.
Contract and salary
We offer annualised hours contracts of 1144 to
1560 hours per annum for this particular post.
Salary will be paid monthly by BACS in arrears.
