methodology employed. . . . It is hard to imagine that any intelligent American with a curious mind and some good recollection of his high school and
college mathematics would not find many entrancing discoveries in the intellectual gold mine that is this work." — The New York Times Book Review
"An excellent reference set for bright high school students and beginning college students . . . also of value to their teachers for lucid discussions and many
good elementary examples in both familiar and unfamiliar branches. The intelligentsia of laymen who care to tackle more than today's popular magazine
articles on mathematics will find many rewarding introductions to subjects of current interest." — The Mathematics Teacher
"Whether a physicist wishes to know what a Lie algebra is or how it is related to a Lie group, or an undergraduate would like to begin the study of
homology, or a crystallographer is interested in Fedorov groups, or an engineer in probability, or any scientist in computing machines, he will find here a
connected, lucid account." — Science

Companion Le Deaux

I think a table of contents would be useful. I use this book as a supplement to the "Princeton
Companion to Mathematics", a companion companion as it were, um . . . companion squared? If we
differentiate (companion)(companion) we get 2companion or "Companion Le Deaux".

Cheap and comprehensive. I bought this book because I was getting interested in math and wanted
something exciting to read through and that wasn't pop-sciency crap. This book delivered. It covers,
loosely speaking, an entire undergraduate curriculum in it's 1120 pages, and there is no beating
that for $20. The material starts from basis analysis and works up from there with few
prerequisites. The coverage of each subject is brief enough as to not bore the reader, while still
being comprehensive enough to give them an appreciation of the topic. Each chapter also ends
with a list of recommended texts if you want to learn more. While they say that the book is aimed
at any reader with experience in high school math, the material is still written at a very high level. I
would absolutely not recommend it to my highschool peers unless they were already really
interested in the subject. With my highschool background, I could understand about 2/3 of the
material - sometimes they will go off on tangents you don't fully understand, and there is no
problem with skipping ahead to something you find more interesting.
So stop reading the review and go buy this book already! Start learning math!

You certainly need a strong foundation in algebra and calculus before you open this book. Note:
There is indeed a section on introducing calculus but not in a million years would I use that as a
first time introduction to new students. The section works only as a refresher or for solidifying
intuition before one embarks on a first course in real analysis.
Again, I have to stress that this book is best as a refresher or for building intuition as an
accompaniment to your main text. In that sense, it is 5 stars.

This is a good survey of nearly all of mathematics. It starts at about high school level and goes
upwards. The authors avoid proofs and exercises in favor of readability. The book was written back
in the 50's but was translated so well that except for a few sovietisms, one would never notice. Best
of all, it formats very well on a PaperWhite which is why I bought it. I've met several
mathematicians who say that they got their start when they came across this book in high school.

There is something admirable about the school of the Russians: they are thinkers doing math, with
remarkable clarity, minimal formalism, and total absence of unnecessary pedantry one finds in
more modern texts (in the post Bourbaki era). This is of course surprising as one would have
expected the exact opposite from the products of the communist era. Mathematicians should be
using this book as a model for their own composition. You can read it and reread it. Professors
should assign this in addition to modern texts, as readers can get intutions, something alas absent
from modern texts.

In this work of over one thousand pages the authors have attempted a broad survey of the fields of
mathematics as they were in the mid twentieth century. The book is highly readable and should be
accessible to advanced undergraduates in the mathematical sciences. The main branches of
mathematics including algebra, analysis, geometry, differential equations, complex analysis,
number theory, approximation, linear algebra, non-euclidean geometry, measure theory, topology,
functional analysis and group theory are all given chapters. I would recommend this work to
anyone seeking an overview of mathematics which also contains some of the meat of the subject.
Very informative.
