Research 1:
Mr. Re cares about solutions to sharing knowledge among foreign and Vietnamese
managers in foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises. He decided to write a paper on
this. Based on his observation and experience, he wrote out his ideas as follows:
- Although access to modern knowledge of management and technology is
important for attracting FDI, over the past years the Government has had no
specific policies to encourage knowledge sharing. They only focused on attracting
capitals, creating jobs, and exporting final products. No clear policies have been
designed for encouraging Vietnamese employees to learn and use knowledge from
FDI enterprises. For Re, this however is of utmost importance for sustainably
attracting FDI.
- There are also no policies or regulations in FDI enterprises for knowledge sharing.
Many enterprises consider the sharing as losing business know-how. Besides,
because of the differences in culture, working styles, education and skill levels, the
knowledge sharing is limited
- Vietnamese employees in the enterprises have no clear intention and skills to learn
knowledge from foreign managers. This is because they may start from low
education without real practices and disciplines required. Others are willing to job-
hop just for a little better salaries.

able to access to knowledge. He also propose that employees in FDIs should be

can be applied in different areas.
b. Solution for enterprises: Enterprises should be informed that knowledge
sharing may have a good impact on business performance. Thus they need to
encourage knowledge sharing by holding more formal and informal training

- How knowledge in the enterprises can be categorized?
- What are the challenges for sharing each type of the knowledge?
- What would be the effective solutions for sharing each type of the knowledge?
Via literature review, Ms. Dy knows knowledge can be categorized in several ways:
1. Based on the content, knowledge may include: technical knowledge (related to
skills and technique used), organizing knowledge (related to managing functions,
planning…), and strategic knowledge (related to future direction and relationship
with the environment)

any countries) and local knowledge (can only be used in some specific location)
However, no ones have done a research in challenges to sharing each type of the
knowledge. Ms. Dy decided to do interviews with managers at FDI enterprises to
understand the challenges and recommend solutions to overcome the challenges.
