It’s bloom time, folks! Literally. Floral prints are strewing their

season and has found its way to our shores as well. Our Prints’
Special taps how big, bright and beautiful, floral motifs have a way of
lending cheer and positivity to the interiors of any space. And similar
patterned accessories just up the glam quotient...
While on the glamour factor, the understated charm of designer
Bubble Batra’s redesigned parental home reaffirms my faith in
family bonds and the power of a subtle palette contrasted with bold
strokes of leather. With wood and mosaic tiles lending a warm vibe,
the interiors of this seven-bedroom home smartly juxtapose opulence
with a rough and masculine ambience, specially in the living area. As
Vanita Arora discovered, it is a home designed with love and passion
that seamlessly blends individual tastes into a homogeneous whole...
Passion seems to be the buzzword, and that’s amply evident in
upcoming artist and calligrapher Payal Bhattacharya’s canvases,
which are bursting with creativity and are a singular combination
of calligraphy and contemporary art. The 26-year-old blithe spirit
has ingeniously transformed her love for the written word into a
profession that satisfies her creative urges and results in canvases
which are style statements in their own right.
From prints to calligraphy, you have a lot to choose from to put your
summer style quotient on an upward swing this season!

Cheers!

I LIKE...
My passion for designing is not
restricted to residential or office
spaces. My designs should create
social awareness. Designing spaces
such as public lavatories, gardens,
pathways, etc always interests me.

DESIGN IS MUCH
MORE THAN WHAT
WE THINK...
It’s a state of mind. It’s an approach to a
problem. Its how you feel. It’s something
that is meaningful and deliberate. For me,
design is peace of mind as it is satisfying
and relaxing. When I started my own
practice, I realised that if we love what we
do, our productivity, creativity and financial
output only follows an upward trend! In
today’s ever changing dynamic market, its
not just about ideas or concepts; it’s about
making them happen and the motto of our
firm is making sense out of space.

“Prints look best in isolation. Avoid mixing two strong prints

together and pick any solid textured fabric to coordinate a print.
When combining two or more prints, it is necessary to match colours exactly. And if the
room is full with curtains, avoid using very large and bold prints. Nature inspired prints
are easy to live with, and suit any type of décor. They look good when clubbed with neutral
colours and timeless pieces of furniture,” suggests Retesh Sharma, Owner and Design Head of Zynna.

“If you have large rooms with high ceilings, you can get away
with pretty much anything, but if your house has low-ceilings, be careful about
the scale. Large-scaled classic patterns can be very dominant in small space. For a fresh

we were emotionally attached with, like my
grandmother’s room. We also retained the spiral
staircase as it reminds my brother and I of our
childhood! Not only does it connect adjoining rooms,
it is fascinating in its own right as clever lighting
helps it emphasise the height of the structure,”
Bubble explains.

For starters, Bubble and Suman divided the

house into three floors and a basement as they
wanted to create a strong, lasting impression of an
environment where the entire family could enjoy
living in and entertaining people as well. For easy
accessibility to each floor, they introduced a lift
within the structure and the formal living area,
Bubble’s grandmother’s room, the kitchen and

Y
our garden isn’t just a green lung for your home,
it can be your veritable pharmacy! Apart from
looking pretty and providing you with space to
indulge your summer and winter evenings in, under the
green cover are numerous healing secrets. The stems,
roots, leaves, flowers, etc of various garden plants har-
bour properties that could cure different diseases. Here
are a few of the most common plants that have medicinal
properties. So, the next time you drop by the nursery,
you’ll know exactly which plants to pick!

Ashwagandha
Also known as Winter Cherry, Ashwagandha is an
herb that has anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory
qualities that help in preventing cartilage damage
in osteoarthritis. The herb contains iron and yields
vitality and vigour when consumed and is also
considered an immune system booster. It treats
leprosy, arthritis, general debility, stress induced
disorders, infertility and memory loss.

Lantana Camara
Commonly known as ‘ham ‘n’ eggs’ (or even an
ornamental plant) due to its adjacent pink and yellow
inflorescence, this is a fast spreading weed. When
planted in a pot, it looks lush and full and in India, it
bears fruit throughout the year. The plant is used to
treat flu, cold, cough, fever, yellow fever, dysentery,
jaundice, etc. Its leaves are specially beneficial in
tackling itching and the roots for treating gonorrhea.
Extracts of the Lantana Camara plant are used
as medicines in the treatment of wounds, leprosy,
scabies, cancers, chicken pox, measles, asthma,
ulcers, swellings, eczema, tumors, high blood
pressure, bilious fevers, catarrhal infections, tetanus,
rheumatism, malaria, etc.

Plumbago
Plumbago promotes appetite and stimulates
perspiration. Its powdered root, when inhaled,
relieves headaches. As a paste, the root can be
applied to treat skin abscesses and ulcers. The
plant also aids in the cure of dyspepsia, piles,
diarrhoea and indigestion. The powdered root,
bark or leaves are often used to treat rheumatic
pain, tuberculosis, gonorrhoea and syphilis.

Black Pepper
The dried and unripe fruits of black pepper
serve as a seasoning agent worldwide. In
addition, they also possess medical properties
that can be used to cure coughs, sore throats,
asthma, anaemia, ear ache, gangrene,
gastric troubles, constipation, piles, worms,
diarrhoea, heart diseases, hernia, hoarseness,
indigestion, insect bites, insomnia, joint pain,
liver problems, lung diseases, oral abscesses,
sunburns, tooth decay and tooth aches.

Periwinkle
In many gardens, the periwinkle — an evergreen
plant — makes for a beautiful ground cover with
its dainty pink or white blooms. It has astringent
and sedative qualities and is used internally for
hypertension, gastritis and enteritis, diarrhoea,
loss of memory and high blood sugar levels. In
addition, it also has tranquillising properties
and helps in relieving muscle pain, depression
of the central nervous system and wasps stings.
Periwinkle can also be used in case of nosebleed,
bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, sore throats and is
known to have anti-cancerous properties.

garden

Rose
The rose needs no introduction; it’s the obvious
choice when choosing flowering varieties for your
garden! The flower is anti-inflammatory and an
expectorant and has digestive, rejuvenating and
tonic properties. The root of the plant aids in the
cure of intestinal ulcers, rickets, haemorrhages and
diarrhoea and the leaves are used for wounds, eye
inflammations, liver disorders, etc. The plant also
helps in the cure of asthma, high blood pressure,
bronchitis, slow circulation, dysmenorrhea (painful
menstruation), fluid retention, palpitation, stress,
urinary tract infections, insomnia and fever.

Thyme
Thyme makes for an excellent tonic and can
be used to treat dry coughs, whooping cough,
bronchitis, asthma, laryngitis, indigestion,
gastritis and diarrhoea and enuresis in children.
The flowering tops form strong antiseptics,
disinfectants, expectorants, sedatives and tonics.
Thyme is also advantageous in the healing
of wounds, fungal infections, inflammations,
tonsillitis, gum diseases, rheumatism, arthritis,
digestive disorders and fevers.

Hibiscus
Hibiscus is a natural diuretic and contains
vitamin C and minerals. According to Ayurveda,
the root of the plant is used to cure cough and
hair fall and the flower is used in making oils
that promote hair growth and prevent hair
fall. Hibiscus tea (without sugar) is highly
recommended for patients with a kidney problem;
it is believed to lower blood pressure too.
