A few weeks ago, Northern India — including power centre New Delhi
— was hit by one of the worst power failures in recent history. And the
fact that it was repeated just a day later didn’t help matters much. Not

TURF!
a capital (pun intended) situation at all! However, what it did bring to
light is that electricity is at a premium now and energy consumption
and conservation should be buzzwords, if they aren’t already. Those who
walk out of rooms without switching off the lights/ACs/fans should be
given a crash course in electri-quette and others should be steered gently
towards environmentally friendly and energy saving options...
Speaking of which, in our Lighting Special, Aditi Gaitonde’s feature on
how a dark and gloomy room can be given bright and cheerful accents to
illuminate it, instead of installing a gazillion bulbs, will definitely get you
thinking! As will Vanita Arora’s tips on how you can effectively cut down
on your energy consumption at home. She has also found some chic
styles to illuminate your outdoor area, whether it’s a pool, porch or patio,
plus the latest lighting trends and accessories... So go on and add some
panache to your lighting fixtures, while effectively being an energy saver
as well.
While we are on the topic of ‘saving’, do browse through our feature on
e-stores that have a plethora of home décor goodies. With great payment
options and a variety that’s truly jawdropping, this one’s for all savvy
shoppers! And don’t forget to keep an eye out for the special offer inside...
With an earthy real home, a truly relaxing Goan getaway and introducing
a new feature — restaurant reviews — we have just the right package for
you... Happy reading!

Cheers!

MY DESIGN LIFE
About 20 years of designing
private residential bungalows
has given me immense
satisfaction. My designs
have always been a result
of an in depth study of a
family's dreams and desires.
I recall a project for an Indian
family residing in Medan,
North Sumatra, Indonesia,
where the client used to
travel a lot. A small nuclear
family having a very large
plot with ample open space
and a rather small useable
area. We designed a small
building, that stood tall and
blended well with the vicinity.
According to me, that was
our best project.

You know what they say ... When
genius strikes, the best time to
shape the idea is now! Precisely what went on
in the minds of India’s finest wedding planners,
Candice Pereira and Jarret D’Abreo, partners
and co-founders of Marry Me — The Wedding
Planners. The couple worked tirelessly for
a month conceptualising and building their
gift and wedding store which was launched
successfully on 11 August.

“Every inch of the store has been custom-made

to fit our vision. The final result is better than we expected,”
smiles Candice Pereira, Co-owner of Marry Me — The Store

STORE PROFILE

STOCKED UP
The idea of gifting store
made perfect sense to
Candice as her wedding
planning business involves
sourcing beautiful things
from all around world,
which her friends would
pick up from her. All the
products from candles and
stationary to cushions and
decorative water cans are
reasonably priced in the
range of `50 – `1500. The
store also plans to stock
fresh flowers and promises
to customise almost
anything to suit their
customers’ fancy.

EYE-CANDY
We simply loved the design
sensibilities which Candice
insists she inherited
from her father Allan (the
creative mind behind the
restaurant’s décor) and
the impeccable execution
of it all by her husband
Jarret. The white walls
and display shelves along
with the focus wall in
pastel floral wallpaper
lend an air of elegance to
the li’l store. A lot of the
display tables have been
upcycled from old family
heirlooms. We particularly
loved the sewing machine-
turned-table, a novel idea
indeed! The non-plastered
naked walls sync perfectly
with the antique replica
bench and tables. Keeping
with the theme, they also
added an eclectic cycle
planter and small planters
resembling a white picket
fence. A must visit!

CURTAIN CALL
To get rid of low light situations,
simply bring down those heavy
drapes. Replace thick curtains with
blinds or shutters, that make sure
plenty of light trickles in during the
day and gives you privacy at night.

WHITE WASHED
As clichéd as this might sound, the best
way to make a room brighter is to go
all-white on the walls and ceiling. The
calming and inherent reflective nature
of white will give an instant lift to a dark
room. Accessories with accents of a
single colour add panache to the space!

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL

The classic trick of using a large mirror
to make the room bigger and brighter
still holds ground for a good reason —
because it works like a charm! If you are
blessed with window, place the mirror
on the opposite wall. Hanging a large
mirror opposite the room's door also
creates an illusion of a larger space!

DID YOU KNOW

The quality of paint on
the exterior walls affects
the interior walls?
Concrete is porous in nature
and allows water to seep
through. Over time, a large
portion of water builds up
and in turn creates damp
patches on the interior
walls. Result? Moss, paint
chipping or paint blisters.

And celebrate nature

it definitely does, in
a fresh and subtle
style. With a bold
lettered signage at the
entrance against the
backdrop of a giant
Neem tree, colourful
furniture and unique
lighting arranged in
an unconventional
manner, this outlet
extends warm vibes
which instantly
envelop you and draw
you inside. Spread
across a generous area
of around 2,200 sq.ft,
the outlet is literally
under the shade of the
Neem tree, which is
also host to unusual
lighting in the garb of
bulbs inside stockings!
“Surrounded by foliage

the cast iron grillwork
offset with glass, our
aim is to create a green
retreat for guests,” add
franchise partners,
Manharan Singh and
Samrat Nigam.

The restaurant, designed by

Amith Chabbra, Livin Colors

example of how interesting
interiors can be created in
an existing space, utilising
elements that are ‘on-hand’.

“We took a cue from

the location rather
than starting with a
pre-conceived vision.
The idea was to make
a space where one can
escape. We have played
around with natural
elements.
We have retained
Mocha’s signature style
— exposed bricks on
the floor — that blend
into the seating of
cast and wrought iron
furniture enveloped
in LED lighting to
give a warm glow.
The flooring is all
stone and one wall is
quartzite stone. A zen
corner is encased with
wooden panelling and
Japanese-style seating,”
he explains. Of course,
a glance around and
it’s impossible to believe
that this used to be a
dilapidated shed!
What works here is
the absence of glaring
edges, so that all the
elements have a natural
fluidity.
