he towers are unlike anything around
them, emerging suddenly as you
pass through the low-rise concrete
blocks of Beach Road in Singapore’s Bugis
precinct. Two curving columns project
towards each other as if seeking an embrace.
Lush greenery surrounds them on the
ground floor, but it extends upwards,
too, to the first floor, and the second, and
to roof terraces even higher than that.
When they opened two years ago,
the Duo towers attracted international
attention thanks to their spotlight-grabbing
architect, Ole Scheeren, who has worked on
landmarks such as the CCTV headquarters
in Beijing and the MahaNakhon tower in
Bangkok, which looks as if it is dissolving
even as it soars 78 floors into the sky.
Duo stands out because of the unusual
semi-circular arrangement of its towers, as
well as the honeycomb pattern that covers
much of their surface. Scheeren says those
were both conceived as ways to adapt the
buildings to their tropical climate: the
curve to channel a constant breeze into
the central courtyard, and the honeycomb
to screen out the sweltering sun. “The

ABOVE IT ALL
If recent history is any indication, you can
expect even more eye-catching developments
boasting a level of comfort and outdoor
living that high-rise flats have rarely been
able to offer in the past. “Greenery has
infiltrated the whole cityscape,” says Tay.
“In projects such as Duo and the South
Beach development by Foster and Partners,
it’s really about lifting the ground up and
creating communal spaces higher up.”
You can see this in 3 Orchard By-
The-Park, designed by Italian architect
Antonio Citterio and completed in 2017.
The luxurious complex consists of three
25-storey towers whose 77 units are meant to
replicate the experience of living in a landed
property; “villas in the sky” is how Citterio
describes them. Some of the apartments
have private lift lobbies and garden terraces;
others have their own swimming pools.
Another example is Nouvel 18, designed
by French architect Jean Nouvel, which has
156 high-end units in a pair of 36-storey
towers completed in 2014. The buildings
are punctuated by sky gardens shrouded
in greenery. The effect is similar to that of
South Beach, a mixed-use development
designed by UK practice Foster + Partners.
Finished in 2016, it recreates a ground-level
experience on multiple floors via elevated
terraces, sky gardens and green walls.

LOCAL ROOTS
“Architecturally, the Singapore fabric
has been changing so much and now
interiors are playing a bigger role as
well,” says designer Peter Tay, who has
worked on units in many of the city’s top
projects, as well as showflats for upcoming
developments such as Guoco Midtown,
a 200-unit tower in Beach Road.
Tay says he wants his interiors to “have
a Singapore identity” that mirrors the
distinctive architecture of the buildings
in which they are housed. That means
tailoring his approach to each individual
space, working to frame exterior
views and “creating a language and an
identity” based on the architecture. In
the case of Nouvel 18 (on the left), he
made ample use of reflective materials
to mirror the building’s glass facade.
NATURAL SELECTION
Angela Lim of SuMisura has also noted an
“ever-increasing efficiency of usable space”;
she recently designed a penthouse in
3 Orchard By-The-Park (seen below). She
observes that her clients are taking the
greenery-infused architecture of their
buildings to heart. “The current market
trends gear towards biophilic designs,
which focus on natural elements such as
vegetation, water and sunlight,” she says.
“Materials and furniture also adopt an
expression of nature through the use of
stone, wood, rattan, linen and cotton, as
well as botanical prints and timber grains.”
GREATER HEIGHTS
Interior designer Terri Tan of Designworx Interior Consultant
has worked on units in recent developments such as Wallich
Residence (pictured above) and Leedon Residences; she has noted
that their architecture tends to make her job easier. “These new
developments often have ceiling heights higher than the norm

Intervention discusses
the importance of
good lighting design
and how it can influence
our emotions
I often say that lighting is like fairy dust—
sprinkle it right and you can create magic.
The aim is not to have someone walk into
an abode and think that the lighting is great.
In fact, if this is the case, then we haven’t
done our job well at all; it’s all about subtlety
and the design of the space as a whole.
Most people are aware of the importance
of good task lighting to help improve
our concentration. But strategic lighting
choices can also help us relax and even
sleep better, thereby improving our health.
Lighting that works with our bodies’
sleep cycles can influence how we feel
and behave. Understanding how and
when you will use a space is therefore the
first step to good lighting design.
1. PERFECT
MATCH
Instead of introducing
additional pieces
that could clutter
the room, consider
transforming furniture
pieces into lamps. We
have wired custom-
made pieces such
as a console, desk
and coffee table, so
that they effectively
function as oversized
lamps, bringing low-
level lighting to
the room.
The light sources
are set at different
angles so that in
addition to light from
Tatler
Homes above, we have light
at eye level as well as
Style below eye level.
92
2. SIZE IT UP
The right lighting can
affect the feeling of
space and change
our perception of
dimensions. The eye
is always drawn to the
brightest point in the
room, so we can play
with how we perceive
the size of a room
through strategic
light planning.
For instance, when
we place a chandelier
in a corner, we draw
the eye to the back
of the room, thereby
increasing the sense
of space.

Another common
mistake I see all the

choosing fixtures
because of how

All the furnishings have been sourced
from around the world and specially
custom-made by E&A Interiors. The
diverse selection includes beaded chairs
from Nigeria, Moroccan rugs and
hammered metal, woven fabrics from
Peru and Guatemala, bone inlay tables
from India, hand-printed linens from the
UK and US, cane and rattan pieces made
in Indonesia, as well as bespoke furniture
crafted by local artisans in Singapore.
Graphic elements found on the bespoke
furniture echo the arched doorways
and angular proportions of the interior
architecture. “Each piece is one-off and
unique to the space; we like to support all of
these artisanal skills,” explains the designer.
Elements of the unexpected abound,
motivated by the well-travelled couple’s
sojourns abroad. These include a bookcase
inspired by a bar that they loved in
New York; the white shelf also functions as
a secret door that leads to the bar area on
the third floor. “The bar upstairs is really

trifecta of elements a designer needs
to balance in every project. With
this 3,000sqft condo at Marina Bay Suite
by MOW Interior, the biggest constraint
was time: just two weeks to design and
eight weeks for construction. When the
owners of the apartment approached
MOW Interior, the couple were expecting
their second child and wanted to move
in as quickly as possible to spend the
confinement period in their new home.
“They found us through our social media
channels and they loved our work,” says
MOW Interior co-founder Shermaine Ong.
“The average turnaround time for a project
of this scale is four months, so the timeframe
was less than ideal, but we were experienced
enough to take this on. We just needed to
make smart decisions to avoid blowing the
budget or sacrificing the design.” Having
been in the business of luxury interior

IT TAKES TWO
The clients’ initial design brief was an
amalgamation of two styles that occupy
different ends of the style spectrum.
The Singaporean wife loves the
Scandinavian style by way of Australian
sensibilities; she adores a mix of pastels,
warm-toned wood and breezy, open
spaces. The Indonesian husband is a
fan of baroque opulence—think crystal
chandeliers and gilded carvings.
“Our challenge was to create something
both clients could be happy with,” says
Ong. MOW Interior paired a restrained
material palette with statement fixtures and
furniture pieces for a happy middle ground.
The result is most apparent in the living and
dining area, which is one uninterrupted
space demarcated only by furniture. The
material palette comprises white, grey
and greige, which serves as a canvas for

design. The feature wall in the living space the study houses
is finished with book-matched slabs of the husband’s
Volakas marble; the stone’s white base collection of spirits
and figurines
and delicate grey veining are a perfect
blend of the husband’s and wife’s tastes.
The golden lighting piece in the
living area is a contemporary take on a
traditional crystal chandelier. The shelves
and wall recesses are also airbrushed with
gold paint, a thoughtful design decision
that saves time and maintenance cost
without sacrificing the opulent touch. “We
could have used metal sheets, but as this
condominium is located near the sea, the
metal will be quick to rust,” says Ong.
A gold screen wedged between the living
and dining areas completes the look. The
surface behind the screen is glazed, and
the screen itself serves as an extension of
the wall that neatly rounds off the shape
of the room without blocking the natural
light in the living area, all while adding
an extra touch of opulence to the space.
PERFECT PLANS
The key to completing the project in 10
weeks was strategic planning. “We had to
carefully alter and adjust the sequence of
construction,” says Ong. The carpentry
works, for example, which are generally
done toward the end of the construction
period were prefabricated in advance to
reduce the time required for the installation.
This called for painstaking precision;
something that could go awry in the
hands of less-experienced designers. This
is most apparent in the husband’s study,
an opulent den featuring a floor-to-ceiling
cabinet finished in dark-wood veneer that
displays his collection of spirits and personal
curios. MOW Interior also played it smart
with a limited footprint in the bathroom

Wright describes his firm’s philosophy as
“modern but timeless”, with the goal of
crafting approachable and experiential
spaces. Everything about the couple’s
needs was taken into consideration—be
it their morning habits, or the ways they
spend their afternoons and evenings.
“We devised the site plan to create a series
of buildings that reacted to their needs,
but created spaces that capitalised on
different times of the day,” he explains.
A sense of transition was crucial—this
is most evident in the main courtyard. “As
you enter the courtyard, much like you
do at a spa, you’re leaving the hectic world
behind and entering through a beautiful

Although the family provided an open brief,
the design firm wanted to ensure that the

elements inspired by each inhabitant.
Taking cues from the owners’ preference
for rose gold and warm hues, Sujonohun
integrated decorative elements in various

various cities in Asia. The team is

Guided by his passion for

PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS
While the use of richly textured
wallpaper and materials such as
marble and timber evokes an overall
sense of luxury, the spaces are also
highly practical. “In every room, we
provided a study or dresser, as we
knew that most occupants require
them. Their proportions needed
to be well planned in order not to
clutter each bedroom,” says Karen.
In one bedroom, the firm
installed a multipurpose day
bed behind the study desk. “We
