Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is
one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology in the
country. The Govt. of India conferred on the Institute, the
Deemed University status (under University Grants
Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956)) with effect from 26th
June 2002. Subsequently, the Central Govt. by Act of
Parliament (National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 (29
of 2007)) declared VNIT Nagpur as an Institute of National
Importance along with all other NITs. The Act was brought
into force from 15th August 2007.
Earlier, the Institute was known as Visvesvaraya Regional
College of Engineering (VRCE). It was established in the
year 1960 under the scheme sponsored by Govt. of India and
Govt. of Maharashtra. The college was started in June 1960
by amalgamating the State Govt. Engineering College
functioning at Nagpur since July 1956. In the meeting held
in October 1962, the Governing Board of the College
resolved to name it after the eminent engineer, planner, and
statesman of the country Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The Institute
is well connected within 5-8 kms to Airport/ Railways and
Central Bus station.
About the Department
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering,
established in 1987, offers B.Tech., M. Tech. and Ph.D.
degrees. The department has well qualified and motivated
faculty members and support staff. The laboratories are
adequately equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The
department is actively involved in R&D as well as
consultancy projects and has collaborations with several
industries, academic institutes and R&D organizations in
the country. It has an intake of 92 students per year under
UG Course and around 25 per year under the PG Course.
About Nagpur
Nagpur is the winter capital and the third largest city of the
Indian state of Maharashtra and largest city of central India.
It is a major commercial and political centre of the Vidarbha
region of Maharashtra. It is famous for the Nagpur orange
and is known as “Orange City” for being a major trade
centre of oranges cultivated in the region. Nagpur is also
called as the “Tiger Capital of India” as it connects many
tiger reserves in India to the world. It is among the important
cities for the information technology sector in Maharashtra.
Nagpur is known for Deekshabhoomi, the largest hollow
stupa among all Buddhist stupas in the world. Here Dr. B.
R. Ambedkar along with nearly 500,000 followers
converted to Buddhism. This was one of the first mass
religious conversions in the history of India. Nagpur is
located in the centre of the country with the Zero Mile
marker indicating the geographical centre of India. Nagpur
has very good connectivity with road and rail. It is also
equipped with an international airport. Bus connectivity is
also good in Nagpur. The construction of metro rail is under
way and is being constructed at a very fast pace. In summary
it is a city which has the best of both worlds – convenience
of small cities and advantages of metro cities both!!
Course Objectives
This short-term course aims to introduce the concepts
involved in the design and implementation of search
engines. It will also touch upon the various challenges
in information retrieval and then focus on use of
machine learning to address those. Search engines are
integral part of our everyday life. Since human
activities heavily revolve around the internet, it is of
interest to understand what all goes behind the design
and implementation of search engines. Information is
available on the internet in the form of text, audio,
video, images and in various formats. To extract useful
data from this sea of information is of keen interest.
This short-term training program will enable the
participants to understand various aspects of search
engines and the design decisions that go behind it.
Course Contents
The broad outline of the course is as follows:
1. IR models and evaluation methods for IR
2. Probabilistic Information retrieval
3. Text classification using Naïve Bayes
4. Bayesian Belief networks and their use in IR
5. Support vector machines applied to IR
6. Clustering techniques for IR
7. Geographical Information retrieval
8. Geotagging and georeferencing
9. Web crawling and link analysis
10. Search engine optimization
11. Modelling spatial data
12. Spatial role labelling
13. Page rank and HITS algorithm
Eligibility of Participants
The training programme is open to engineering
professionals, software engineers, teachers from
engineering colleges (both degree and polytechnic colleges)
and Research Scholars/PG students interested or working in
said area.
Registration Fee
There is no registration fee for the course, However the
accommodation, breakfast and dinner during the course is
to be arranged by the participants by their own. The high tea
and lunch will be provided by the organisers. For out station
faculty participants, suitable accommodation may be
arranged in Institute guest house (twin sharing) on payment
basis and based on availability during the said period. For
students the accommodation will be in the hostel on
payment basis. The participants should make their own
arrangements for travel for attending the proposed course.
The registration form duly filled with Institution seal should
be sent by email/post to the organisers latest by 30th May
2019. The number of participants for the programme is
limited to 40 on first come first serve basis.
Programme Faculty
Apart from the co-ordinators, faculties from reputed
institutes like IITs, NITs will deliver their expert lectures and
hands-on training.
Important Dates
The completed registration form may be sent either as an
e-mail attachment to mansiaradke@gmail.com or as a hard
copy (registration form duly filled ) on or before May 30,
2019. The registration form should contain the signature of
the Head of the Institution/organization with seal.
